Title: WWE SummerSlam 2002

Colcollazo - April 22, 2006 07:26 PM (GMT)
Felt like watching SummerSlam 2002 again last night and here's how it went.

Kurt Angle vs. Rey Mysterio
Match really hasn't lost a step, it was an excellent opener with both men turning it up a notch, working so much into a 10 minute match. Angle was just about at his best here, killing time in a good way by taunting Rey, beating him up in the corner, countering Rey's comeback teases with suplexes and basically being really good in control. Rey is his usual great self here as he's the one who pops the crowd with his great spots especially during the finishing stretch. Great finish here with Angle countering the top rope hurancanrana with the anklelock. Probably ***3/4.

Chris Jericho vs. Ric Flair
Wasn't really feeling this at all. They exchange a bunch of chops, mostly Flair in the beginning. The take it to the outside and strike some more, they take it back in and at least Jericho adds some comedy by calling someone near ringside a son of a bitch. The only other thing I really like about this match is when Flair holds the ropes and taps at the same, making Jericho believe he won. But once the ref tells him he didnt because Flair was holding the ropes, Jericho pushes him. Jericho was a funny heel back in 2002. **.

Eddie Guerrero vs. Edge
The beginning was a little messy until they found something to work with once Eddie threw Edge through the ropes to the outside. From there, Eddie is great, working on Edge's shoulder with hot intensity, talking shit in spanish to Edge, moving inbetween holds for example from a straight armbar into a fujiwara armbar. Edge to his credit is good with his facials and selling all through the match into the finish where he spears Eddie and is still selling his shoulder. *** sounds good.

Booker T & Goldust vs. Christian & Lance Storm
This was also a little messy in the beginning until Christian & Storm get full control of Goldust once Christian throws Goldust over the the turnbuckle. Christian & Storm do decent as a heel tag team cheating behind the ref's back because Book is distracting the ref. Goldust is pretty good face in peril too, giving Book the hot tag and from there it gets fun as Book around this time was a really good, excited, hyped up face. Bunch of fun spots in the finishing stretch, but I don't remember how it ended. **1/2.

Chris Benoit vs. Rob Van Dam
Really good match, it's really, mostly due to Benoit as he's great here. The thing that hit me the most was his crazy quickness inbetween moves, just unbelievable. One thing that does bother me is RVD doing some comeback teasing facials when Benoit's fully in control instead just selling fatigue or whatnot. It would've been better had he done if they were working a comeback for him. Also the finish is really sudden and sort of outta nowhere, needed more build. But all in all Benoit puts on a great performance carrying RVD here. Around ***1/4.

Test vs. Undertaker
Right off the bat, Undertaker suprises me with his agility. First thing he did was really high leapfrog showcasing how light on his feet he can actually be. He also did a nice armdrag if I remember and a sick clothesline flipping Test on his head. Test isn't good on control but but isn't bad, pretty much average when he got in control, but it gets hot again in the finish, and UT finishes Test with a sick tombstone. **1/4.

Shawn Michaels vs. Triple H
This got really good towards the middle but then got bad once HBK kipped up after HHH's back work. Also, I need to mention that HHH was the better worker in this match. Everything he did during his control on HBK was crisp, and the back work he did wasn't bad, especially not bad enough for HBK to shit on it with his kip up. Despite, HBK no selling the back during the finishing sequence, the crowd was hot for HBK's spots at least. But overall I'd say this is a **3/4 match, due HHH suprising me here.

Brock Lesnar vs. The Rock
I probably like this more than most, but I thought was a really hot main event. Pace was sick from the beginning, and both men were good here. This was the perfect match to put over Brock, and Rock let him have his control, Brock ran with it, Rock got comeback for awhile before the finish. Really well done match imo, around the ***1/4 mark.

Top to bottom a really good, really fun PPV. One of the best shows WWE has ever put on.

Hey, it's a Summerslam 2002 review that might not piss Scrooge off. Nice job :)

You're right, it doesn't piss me off. I agree with almost every rating, outside of a slight 1/4 or 1/2* difference.
