Title: What Sports Did You Play?

TheGreatWhiteChoate - April 20, 2006 06:43 AM (GMT)
Just kinda list what you played and how long you played them.

Baseball- 2nd grade to 8th grade. Kinda blew my shoulder out, so I don't play much anymore.
Football- 5th grade to 8th grade. Still play pickup.
Basketball- 1st grade to 7th grade. Still play pickup.
Tennis- 7th grade to present...still play a couple times a week, when I can.
Track- 10th grade to 12th grade.
Golf- I play when I forget how much I hate it.

Scrooge McSuck - April 20, 2006 06:54 AM (GMT)
I mainly played basketball and soccer. Basketball is one of those games that's really fun to play, but boring to watch. Ditto Soccer, I guess. Because of my "above average" build compared to the guys I played with, in basketball I was always used to help pick-off someone on the other team and grab about 500 rebounds every day, and in Soccer I was goalie (I don't have the stamina to run back and forth on a field for an hour).

I'm absolutely terrible at baseball (no hand-eye coordination or fielding skills), even more terrible at tennis, and have low cardio-training to do track.\

Short-short:
Basketball: As far back as I can remember
Soccer: Ditto
Baseball: Barely ever
Football: From 7th-10th grade
Tennis: 11th & 12th grade

Edit: And I absolutely HATE Golf. Insert George Carlin Rant Here.

Real F'n Show - April 20, 2006 12:11 PM (GMT)
Baseball - kindergarten - present
Basketball - 7th grade - 10th grade

Big F'N Swigg - April 20, 2006 02:58 PM (GMT)
I've played Baseball, Basketball & Football. But I jumped around to much to say what years.

S.T. Strickler - April 20, 2006 08:07 PM (GMT)
I never played sports for a school or league, but I just mainly played with friends.

dynamite kido - April 20, 2006 08:49 PM (GMT)
I played baseball until my sophmore year......I wanted to play football and started throughout high school. Blew out my knees my senior year and that was that.

I've played in Basketball leagues years ago, but I never played in high school or anything. I liked it, but I was better at football and enjoyed it more.

eStragand - April 20, 2006 09:29 PM (GMT)
Soccer- Kindergarten YMCA league.
I realized it was a crappy sport when a girls team beat us.

Baseball- 2nd grade through 6th grade
Completely lost any hand-eye coordination when I had to start wearing glasses in 5th grade. Plus, I was always afraid of getting hit by the ball.

Football- 2nd grade through 12th grade
With all 11 concussions. I quit halfway through senior year after another blow-to-the-head. Realized my head was more important than the final 5 weeks of my football "career".

I coached a high school football team for 2 years in the mid 90's, too.

Track- 10th and 11th grade
Just did the shotput, discus and "weightmen's relay". Wasn't competitive, more like off-season training for the football players. Run 1/4 mile, hang out, eat Fritos and watch the girl's team. Of course, when we could, we'd take over the high jump pit and make it into a 'rasslin ring. 12 big guys all trying to do the Superfly Splash at once.

Softball- not really a sport... but started playing in 2000. I don't consider weightlifting and biking/mtn biking "sports", either.. but I've been doing those forever.

Scrooge McSuck - April 20, 2006 09:53 PM (GMT)
ES is the Softball Strikeout King. He can be our Nolan Ryan... and DK can be Robin Ventura.

Highly doubtful. I would have taken the bat to the mound with me.

DK has way more sense than Robin Ventura.

Touche... I guess I'll have to be the teams sacrificial lamb.

whitemilesdavis - April 21, 2006 01:40 AM (GMT)
Football - 3rd grade through middle school. It was the sport I loved, and still the only one I care about. I didn't make the weight limit the last couple of years I played, as in I was too light. 8th grade, they finally said it was too much.

Played two years of baseball after football was over. Great in the field, embarassingly bad at the plate. Could have kept making the team, but it was really demoralizing.

10th through 12th grade I played basketball and then in a few community leagues after high school. Started every game my 11th and 12th grade year. All but two my 10th grade year. Mostly point, little bit of 2 guard. Played really good my soph and junior year. I was lazy and kinda hogged my senior year. Had a few "walk-on" offers from a few small D-1 schools. Ended up going with UNCW, but quit school before basketball season started.

I boxed from the time I was real small up into high school. Did good, only lost a couple of fights. Didn't have real power, but amateur boxing is all about points anyhow, and I was fast and could take a punch, so it worked out for me.

Trained in Tae Kwon Do, Judo, and Muay Thai. Had 2 official MMA type fights. I be 0-2. I don't do that no more.

Bullshit. Me and my friends once formed a Trampoline Boxing Federation.

TheGreatWhiteChoate - April 21, 2006 02:00 AM (GMT)
I once killed a man by looking at him.

Well, I didn't really, but we were big time trampoline wrestlers back in the day, before I got tired of getting powerbombed onto the iron bars and went back to baseball.

Real F'n Show - April 21, 2006 02:02 AM (GMT)
TRAMPOLINE BOXING. With legal kicks. Don't fuck with me.

Scrooge McSuck - April 21, 2006 02:07 AM (GMT)
I challenge WMD to Mortal Kombat.

TheGreatWhiteChoate - April 21, 2006 02:09 AM (GMT)
I like that WMD is kinda low key about his martial arts. Most martial artists I know are high and mighty jackasses, and one of my favorite moments in high school was watching one kid pull his karate on someone twice his size and get completely destroyed.

The last guy that said that to me is missing a cheek.

Scrooge McSuck - April 21, 2006 02:19 AM (GMT)
Which cheek? :D

Big F'N Swigg - April 21, 2006 02:20 AM (GMT)
I'm assuming it's an ass cheek

What positions did everyone play in their sports?

I was a QB in football, a SS and OF in baseball, and a point guard in basketball.

Real F'n Show - April 21, 2006 02:30 AM (GMT)
Shortstop. Season's starting soon actually. I'm one of the worst hitters on the team (hit .255 last year) but I won the team's Gold Glove.

Scrooge McSuck - April 21, 2006 02:30 AM (GMT)
I doubt anyone's surprised with your handling abilities.

Big F'N Swigg - April 21, 2006 02:45 AM (GMT)
I played Catcher, Outfield & First Base in baseball

In football I was fullback & linebacker.

In basketball I was small forward.

jamiegeist - April 21, 2006 04:32 AM (GMT)
Never played organized football, but almost always played a Tight-End like position in pick-up.

Played center in basketball. It was middle school, and I was like 6 foot and a half inch, so I was the center. Of course, I'm still that tall, and now am just a fat point guard.

Baseball I usually played outfield. Had a decent arm. Tried first, but kind of sucked at a position I thought would be easy. Caught a bit, but seemed to always be getting in the balls by something or other.

Oh, and play(ed) Tennis, and quite well I might add.

And I like golf. It doesn't like me, but I don't really hold that against it.

Oh, and I'm a 1 time HCW World Champion. (Backyard wrestling)

Big F'N Swigg - April 21, 2006 02:35 PM (GMT)
I would have stayed at catcher if my knees were better. But even as a kid I had bad knees. The doctors kept telling me it was "growing pains." But now I'm as old as Kirk Cameron in that show, and my knees still suck. Assholes.

Mad Dog - April 23, 2006 05:37 PM (GMT)
I trained in Tae Kwan Do for awhile.

Played baseball but that was a frustrating sport for me. When I was a really good hitter I couldn't field for shit. And then when I finally became a good fielder I had suffered a ton of knee injuries and my hitting was gone. It's actually quite frustrating as I'm still a really good contact hitter, there's just no power behind anything. I could've probably fixed that but I didn't really want to bother learning a new swing.

I also could probably be a competitive archer if I actually wanted to be.

I was a terrible hitter, but I was really good at bunting and I was fast, so they stuck me in the leadoff and let me go to town. I also played a really good shortstop until my best friend beat me out for it in 6th grade, and then it was off to the outfield.

eStragand - April 24, 2006 04:41 AM (GMT)
I always played line in football. I didn't know the difference between defense and offense until 4th grade, though. I didn't know the correct way to block for a certain play until 6th grade, when I went to a new team. Up 'til then, I would just think "oh... on offense: can't use my hands. On defense: I CAN use my hands".

Played offensive line exclusively after that. Usually guard. Senior year, I played T-back a little bit-- an extra fullback we'd throw in the backfield, lined up behind the tackle or tight end. But I was so far behind with my head injuries at that point that I never got any game time at the position.

In baseball, I played right field. I sucked. I think in third grade I moved all the way up to 3rd base for about a month. Or, more accurately, there were three kids that sucked more than me for that month, and they were in the outfield. Looking back...damn, our coach was a tool.

In softball I played catcher and loved it. I'd squat, block the plate, wear a mask (with a doctor's note from my broken nose), all that shit. We did a tournament on Halloween once and I caught five games in a row. Fuck, did that hurt!

Princess Leena - April 24, 2006 06:57 AM (GMT)
Tennis - Forever.
Basketball - One year in grade school.
Volleyball - About one day in high school.
Cheerleading (if that counts) - About two years.

whitemilesdavis - April 24, 2006 12:05 PM (GMT)
Woah. We have a cheerleader on our board. How cool is that?

I was an ok contact hitter. I usually hit it directly over second and it typically dropped out of anyone's reach. Though I was that guy that guy that took like 15 pitches to get rid of. I could usually catch a piece of anything so it was usually a ton of foul balls, me taking a couple of balls and then grounding out or something.

TheGreatWhiteChoate - April 24, 2006 03:28 PM (GMT)
So you were like David Eckstein, without being tiny. Not a bad thing to be at all.

And Leena, you pretty good at tennis?
