Title: April 10: comic trivia

eStragand - April 10, 2006 07:56 PM (GMT)
Trivia's one of my big things, so I thought I'd attempt to do 10 weekly questions about comics. I'm trying for a good mix of easy and tough questions. This week's questions are all Marvel-based. Since this is DWB, I'm gonna' try to toss in one rasslin' related question, if possible.

You CAN Google them if you must, but the idea is answer as many as you can. If you're stumped, go on an Internet scavenger hunt for the answers...that can be just as rewarding. The intent is not to amaze you with my stupid comic knowledge, rather to have some fun, create discussion and get you guys to go on a little trip around Comic Land.

So what can you win?!! Knowledge. Wisdom. Power. ...and Cool Points!

This weeks' questions:

1-- Name the one hero on the cover of "Marvel SuperHeroes Secret Wars" who was NOT sent to "Battleworld" with the other heroes, and not seen in the entire series.

2-- In early 1998, Marvel teased a "new Avengers member- one who made their first appearance OUTSIDE of the Marvel Universe, proper". Who was it?

3-- What was the name of Peter Parker's cratchety old landlady in the 80's?

4-- Name the kid whose body housed Sleepwalker.

5-- Who was the first NON-Mutant member of the X-men?

6-- Name the weird Batman/Robin knock-offs that appeared in Contest of Champion II.

7-- Which title did Sabretooth first appear in?

8-- What is Bruce Banner's full name?

9-- Name the Wrestling organization that the Thing worked for.

10-- What was the name of the "new X-man" from a FOOM contest in the mid 70's, slated to appear in "Giant Size X-men #1", but never appeared until 2001?

2-- In early 1998, Marvel teased a "new Avengers member- one who made their first appearance OUTSIDE of the Marvel Universe, proper". Who was it? Triathalon?

3-- What was the name of Peter Parker's cratchety old landlady in the 80's? Mrs. Muggins

4-- Name the kid whose body housed Sleepwalker. Rick Sheridan

5-- Who was the first NON-Mutant member of the X-men? Mimic, or are you talking officially because it was never confirmed one way or the other. If not him then Lockheed was probably the first non-mutant.

6-- Name the weird Batman/Robin knock-offs that appeared in Contest of Champion II.

7-- Which title did Sabretooth first appear in? Iron Fist

8-- What is Bruce Banner's full name? Dr. Robert Bruce Banner

9-- Name the Wrestling organization that the Thing worked for.

10-- What was the name of the "new X-man" from a FOOM contest in the mid 70's, slated to appear in "Giant Size X-men #1", but never appeared until 2001? Xorn

The Sage grades your answers:
2- Not Triathlon.
3- Yup.
4- Yup. Rick or Rich
5- Yup. Mimic. For years he was listed as the only non-mutant on the team.
7- Yup. Iron Fist
8- Very close. 3/4. Missing one more middle name. Hint: it was tacked on in the late 70's.
10- Not him. Hint: he never appeared in any "X-men" title. Admittedly, this is a toughie.

2. Oh stupid me. It was Firestar who first appeared on Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends.

2. Oh stupid me. It was Firestar who first appeared on Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends.

2. Yup. Firestar.

So that leaves us with:

1-- Name the one hero on the cover of "Marvel SuperHeroes Secret Wars" who was NOT sent to "Battleworld" with the other heroes, and not seen in the entire series.

6-- Name the weird Batman/Robin knock-offs that appeared in Contest of Champion II.

8-- What is Bruce Banner's full name? (still need one more middle name) Dr. Robert ____ Bruce Banner

9-- Name the Wrestling organization that the Thing worked for.

10-- What was the name of the "new X-man" from a FOOM contest in the mid 70's, slated to appear in "Giant Size X-men #1", but never appeared until 2001?

#8 has something to do with the TV show, doesn't it?

eStragand - April 12, 2006 04:27 PM (GMT)
Yes it does.

....oh, and the answer is NOT "Lou" :)

Bit of a clarification on #10: the FOOM contest was to make a Marvel HERO, not necesarily an X-man (they weren' too popular then). After the winner was revealed, the FOOM crew announced that he would be featured in the upcoming "New" X-men.

The other name in #8 is David

eStragand - April 12, 2006 04:54 PM (GMT)
#8. Yup. David. Added at the height of the TV show's popularity. Supposedly, the producers of the show didn't want their lead character to be named "Bruce", since they thought it sounded "gay", thanks to Batman.

Also, "Robert" was included because Marvel slipped up in the early Hulk stories and often called him "Bob Banner". So they no-prized their way out of that one.

To close out this week's questions. The answers.... REVEALED!

1-- Name the one hero on the cover of "Marvel SuperHeroes Secret Wars" who was NOT sent to "Battleworld" with the other heroes, and not seen in the entire series.
--It was the X-men's Kitty Pryde, aka Ariel, aka Sprite. She appears on the famous "busting out" cover of issue #1, but wasn't sent to Battleworld.

6-- Name the weird Batman/Robin knock-offs that appeared in Contest of Champion II.
Lockdown and Rosetta Stone. I think this was their only appearance.

9-- Name the Wrestling organization that the Thing worked for.
The Unlimited Class Wrestling Federation. When I got into pro wrestling and PWI around 1987, I saw "UWF" listed and thought "heyyyy..they're stealing the THING's wrestling league!!"

10-- What was the name of the "new X-man" from a FOOM contest in the mid 70's, slated to appear in "Giant Size X-men #1", but never appeared until 2001?
Humus Sapien. He made his appearance in "Thunderbolts". Really, reallllly weird concept. Google him.

I have some DC trivia set to roll-out, tomorrow.

Mad Dog - April 18, 2006 06:12 AM (GMT)
Damn #1. I looked at that fucking cover for 20 minutes and couldn't for the life of me figure out who it was. I blame it on Lockheed going to Battleworld.
