Title: Random Coliseum Video Match Reviews

Scrooge McSuck - April 6, 2006 06:13 AM (GMT)
- After going through a good number of Coliseum Videos, I've come to the conclussion most of them stunk like week old diarrhea. So instead of reviewing a full tape where I might enjoy 1-2 matches, I'll just go with a "random match" thing and review select matches and segments from various tapes, that way I can do more good matches, but still do some bad ones, within reason.

- WWF Intercontinental Championship Match:
Bret "Hitman" Hart © vs. Shawn Michaels (w/ Sensational Sherri):

Coliseum Video: Rampage '92
Taping Date: June 2nd, 1992; from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
Commentary: Sean Mooney & Lord Alfred Hayes
Bret and Shawn must've wrestled 100 times in 1992, or at least enough that a different match was included on every Coliseum Video from that year. Bret and Shawn were programmed for a feud a few weeks following WrestleMania VIII, but quick changes altered booking, so it never had a "true" blow-off. This is a Coliseum Video Exclusive, so I expect some half-assing from both men. Before the match, Lord Alfred notes that Shawn is very good looking... and it ends it there. Thanks for keeping the tape heterosexual, Lord. As usual, Bret kisses the belt goodbye and gives his sunglasses to some snot-nosed brat. Lockup to start, and Shawn takes Bret over with an arm drag. Lockup #2, and Michaels applies a wristlock. Bret counters, so Shawn takes him down with a yank of the hair. Bret with a kip-up to reverse, but Shawn pulls the hair again. Both men go through a hammerlock until Bret uses the momentum of both him and Shawn to throw Shawn through the ropes. Bret pulls Shawn into the ring by the arm and hammers away. Bret with a knee to the elbow, and he bars the arm. Shawn with a break in the corner, but it isn't clean. Irish whip across the ring, and Bret comes charging out with a clothesline for a two count. Bret goes back to work on the left arm. Irish whip to escape, and a criss-cross leads to Bret catching Shawn in mid-air. Bret sling-shots Shawn into the post for another two count, then goes to the arm again. Another escape, and Bret puts him down with a shoulder block. Bret bounces off the ropes again, and Shawn comes back with a knee to the midsection. Bret blocks being rammed into the buckle, but gets whipped hard across the ring. Shawn stomps away at the small of the lower back of Bret, then chokes until Sherri gets in a cheap shot. Irish whip, and Michaels comes off the ropes with a running high knee for a two count. I could've sworn I've never see him do that one before. Resthold time, as Shawn goes to the reverse chinlock. Bret escapes with elbows to the midsection, but Shawn puts him back down with a back elbow, then goes back to the chinlock. Bret fights out again, this time with an overhead wristlock. Irish whip, and Bret with a surprise small package for a two count. Shawn quickly goes back on offense, hammering away with rights and lefts. CHINLOCK! Bret fights out again before being caught in a Sleeper. Bret escapes that by backing Shawn into the corner, but gets nailed with a dropkick. Irish whip to the corner, and Shawn runs into a boot. Bret to the middle rope and he connects with a clothesline. Bret with an inverted atomic drop, followed by rights to the midsection. Irish whip across the ring, and Bret nails a clothesline to the back of the head for a two count. Bret with a back breaker, followed by the second rope elbow drop for another two count. Nasty looking uppercut style forearm by Bret. Shawn with a back slide out of nowhere for a two count. Bret returns with a school boy out of nowhere for another two count. Irish whip, and both men bop heads. Michaels gets up first and nails the reverse crescent kick, before the move actually won matches. Michaels goes for his special back suplex, but Bret counters into a sunset flip for a two count. Michaels escapes a back suplex, but doesn't get anywhere with a roll-up. Sherri and Michaels have a miscommunication on the apron, allowing Bret to roll Shawn up for the three count at 13:32. Not one of my favorite choice for endings, to be honest. This one had some great stuff in the opening and closing minutes, but those chinlocks from Shawn really took it down a few notches. Still one of the "better" Coliseum Video matches from this time frame. (***1/4)

- The Ultimate Warrior & The Undertaker (w/ Paul Bearer) vs. The Berzerker & Papa Shango (w/ Mr. Fuji):
Coliseum Video: Rampage '92
Taping Date: June 3rd, 1992; from Cornwall, Ontario, Canada
Commentary: Gorilla Monsoon & Lord Alfred Hayes
Holy fuck, who the hell came up with the idea for this one? Should we ignore that no more than a year earlier the Undertaker tried KILLING The Warrior? Or how about the fact that the Berzerker and Papa Shango, who have never wrestled in tag matches before on television, are teaming up here? And tthat both are off-the-wall gimmicks that are 1000% opposite of each other? And it's a really sad day in hell when the Undertaker is the best "wrestler" in a match consisting of three other people. Oh well, at lease I have Monsoon on commentary to bring the suck level down a little bit. Lord Alfred, the brilliant color man he is, says Papa Shango is a master of WITCH-CRAFT (I could've sworn he performed "Voodoo"), then calls the Undertaker's urn a "vase." During Warrior's entrance, Berzerker eats a fans sign, no doubt because he skipped on breakfast that morning. Warrior and Undertaker stand around looking at each other... but this is 1992, so they just beat up on the heels. Undertaker weakly clotheslines Berzerker out, and Warrior does the same to Shango. Berzerker hammers away on the Undertaker, but there's some no selling going around. Underfucker fights back and chokes away in the corner. Irish whip across the ring, and 'Taker misses a charge. Berzerker with a running dropkick, sending Undertaker over and out. Undertaker no-sells again, and pulls the Berzerker out of the ring for a few seconds. Warrior tags in and quickly does Tatanka's War-Dance. Warrior with a scoop slam of the Berzerker, followed by a clothesline into the corner. Warrior with several shoulder blocks until Shango clotheslines Warrior across the back of the head from the ring apron. Shango tags in for the first time, and hammers on the midsection of Warrior. Shango applies a front-facelock and beats Warrior down. Berzerker and Shango take turns beating up the Warrior, but 99% of it all is punching and kicking, so I'm slacking off. Undertaker finally gets the dead-tag and hammers on Berzerker. Undertaker with a chokeslam on Berzerker, followed by the diving clothesline on Shango. The heels take over for a second, but both are floored with Warrior clotheslines. Warrior with a diving shoulder tackle and splash on Berzerker, and that's all for him at 7:50. Yeck... that's all. (-*)

Crap from Rampage '92 I wouldn't dare touch:
1. The Undertaker vs. Razor Ramon - A "Coliseum Video Exclusive", which means "both men dial it in Collect." Punch-kick-rest-stall. There's the entire play-by-play of the match.
2. 40-Man Battle Royale - Too bad 22 of the participants of Superstars and Challenge Jobbers, otherwise I might care about the "40-Man" part. Davey Boy Smith wins by eliminating both Beverly Brothers at once.
3. Tatanka vs. Rick Martel - These two were feuding over Martel stealing Tatanka (Buffalo) feathers... and that's all the interesting points I can make. This one sucked, too.
4. LOD & Paul Ellering vs. Beverly Brothers & The Genius - Maybe if Ellering and Genius had a bigger role than "nothing" in the match, I'd care. The lone bright-spot (literally) is the Genius' outrageous tights. Black with bright green "G"'s printed all over his body.
5. Tito Santana & Virgil vs. Money INC. - Decent match that was pulled from an episode of PrimeTime Wrestling, but I'm not in a Santana/Virgil mood to review it this time.
6. Randy Savage vs. Repo Man - Savage phones it in too, and Repo isn't the guy to try and pull Savage out of being lazy.

Warrior/Taker vs. Shango/Zerker was the time-honored "combine two feuds by putting all four guys in a tag match".

Dude...you're looking for logic with WARRIOR?!!

And Berzerker EATS a sign?! I didn't care for him at the time, but nowadays whenever I see a 'Zerker match, I like the guy more and more. Oh yes, I must say it: "My Love for you is like a truck-- BERZERKER! Do you want some making fuck--BERZERKER!!"

You're right... what am I thinking looking for logic in a Warrior match?

And yes, Berzerker is eating a sign. They don't show him too long, but he's clearly chewing on a piece of paper with a Warrior symbol drawn on it while more shredded paper is in one of his hands.
