MTV Tapings Results

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just back from the tapings. It was pretty good, not sure it was worth the 3+ hour wait, but still good.

The show was held in an abandoned brewery, purposely made to look run down, with a lot of attention given to make it look like a "fight club" underground kind of atmosphere. The turnbuckles were covered with towels and duct-tape, there was no ring apron exposing dirt and debris and some lights and a fog machine under the ring. No chairs, which kinda sucked, but the show wasn't that long so it wasn't too big a deal I guess.

The dark match was Human Torando vs Alter Boy Luke vs Puma. Human Toranado picked up the victory after getting probably the biggest pop of the night which keep going all the way to the end of the match.

After the dark match we had to wait about half an hour for the band to play because of a noise ordiance which made them wait until 6pm. The band turned out to be Black Label Society, I was surprised that it was actually a good rock band. They had to replay there songs a couple times for recording purposes.

The opening match was Matt Sydal vs Jack Evans. Evans picked up the victory after a sick 630 off the top rope.

The next match was the Main Event. It was a combonation of a Royal Rumble match and a Death Match. Every couple minutes a new guy would enter, and the only way to get eliminated was to be thrown over the top rope either threw a table, or on to a tricked out electric box, or onto a chain-link fence rigged to explode. When it was down to 4 guys they put ladders in the ring and the remaining participants had to go for 2 contracts above the ring for a title match.

The first two guys in were Justin Credible and Teddy Hart after that I lost track, and I wasn't familar with all the guys, but it also included Alter Boy Luke, Alkatraz, Puma, New Jack, X-pac, and Vampiro. X-Pac and Vampiro ended up winning by getting the contracts. After the match they brawled around a little bit, and Vampiro thanked everybody and said something about this show being 22 years in the making, and it was great to mix hardcore rock with hardcore wrestling. Black Label Society played another song while X-Pac and Vampiro fought some more, and that was about it.

I just read on the boards here about the hipsters getting paid to be there, and it now makes sense to me why there was quite a few good looking girls there, which you don't normally see at a indy show.

If they put on another show I'd go again, but I'd find a place to park closer to the studio so I wouldn't have to wait for there "shuttles"

I guess it's not wrong for me to chant "that show sucks?" Jesus, that makes a bad episode of Impact look good.

Mad Dog - February 10, 2006 03:35 PM (GMT)
Yeah the only reason to bother going was to see Black Label Society. Which is pathetic considering it's a wrestling show and BLS hasn't done anything of note since the 90s.

Scrooge McSuck - February 10, 2006 03:37 PM (GMT)
MTV still thinks it's the 90's, so it's a perfect fit.

Mad Dog - February 10, 2006 03:40 PM (GMT)
Someone brought up a good point on another board that they should just go all out. Sign every piece of trash that's burned all their bridges in wrestling.

Scrooge McSuck - February 10, 2006 03:46 PM (GMT)
So where's the Warrior when you need him? :D

Yep. Then blow up the fucking building they are wrestling in.

whitemilesdavis - February 10, 2006 03:51 PM (GMT)
Well, if you were going to this, you would have to know in advance that you were going to the taping of a TV show, not a live wrestling event. I'm still curious to see what MTV does with this in editting and all. It certainly won't be good wrestling, but it could make for entertaining TV.

Mad Dog - February 10, 2006 03:52 PM (GMT)
30 second clipped matches and the rest of the show is music and teenie boppers.

Scrooge McSuck - February 10, 2006 03:54 PM (GMT)
So basically it's the same screwjob MTV does to music videos during TRL? 56 minutes of pretty boys with no charisma/personality and 10 second clips of the top 10 videos of the day.

dynamite kido - February 10, 2006 04:00 PM (GMT)
MTV. Killing your attention span one day at a time.

whitemilesdavis - February 10, 2006 04:02 PM (GMT)
I would assume Real World style backstage confessionals, completely clipped matches focusing on big spots and dramatic moments, and yeah, lots of good looking white kids. There shall be no ***** matches on this show, but I just may like it anyway.

prof_plague - February 10, 2006 06:04 PM (GMT)
So, it's basically a bunch of guys who were decent at one time, but just need to do any show now to make money.

I wanna know when Vampiro, Alter Boy Luke, etc were ever decent?

Scrooge McSuck - February 10, 2006 06:34 PM (GMT)
Maybe Vampiro was like 15 years ago when no one here heard of him.

whitemilesdavis - February 10, 2006 06:38 PM (GMT)
Vamp was decent when he started in WCW, and he was really getting over for a few days.

Mad Dog - February 10, 2006 07:40 PM (GMT)
Vampiro was slightly above average when he did a couple of appearances in 98 for WCW. His Nitro match with Brad Armstrong was ok.

jamiegeist - February 10, 2006 08:05 PM (GMT)
It sounds like a damn backyard fed. Royal Rumble, throw people over on to exploding things....until there are 4 left. Then its a super duper ladder match for two contracts.

Mad Dog - February 10, 2006 08:17 PM (GMT)
So I guess if you want to get a good seat at these you have to send a headshot to MTV.

OK. How about partially recongnizable names, that have faded away?

Black Label Society has done alot of stuff since the 90's. Zakk didn't form the band until 1998. Probably their biggest hit was in 2003 with "Stillborn". "Suicide Messiah" came out last sumemr and did pretty well. They haven't really had a mainstream crossover yet, but it's not like they're some old washed-up band. Zakk was only about 20 when he was playing for Ozzy in the late 80's and I woudn't call him a dinosaur.

Unless you're thinking about Zakk's previous post-Ozzy band, "Pride & Glory", which was him doing a shitty Skynyrd impersonation. They had maybe two albums from 94-98 and nothing that really stood out.

Hey, I liked Vampiro... in early 2000 he was almost up to "#2 babyface role" in WCW. Along with Booker and Kidman, he was one of the few guys who benefitted, booking-wise, when Benoit & Friends left. He even tagged with Hogan once. Then he had a weird feud with Sting in the "New Blood" months and kinda' flaked out.

Mad Dog - February 10, 2006 08:31 PM (GMT)
They aren't washed up or anything but they've been kind of a forgotten band for awhile now. They're miles ahead of about anything else MTV would've put on though.

eStragand - February 10, 2006 09:22 PM (GMT)
I kinda' feel that they're "upper midcard" of current metal bands. The majority of "rock radio" is still stuck on Mettalica, Ozzy and AC/DC, but from what I've seen, BLS is fairly popular among the rock/metal crowd.

But avoid their "In This River" tribute song to Dimebag... fuck, is that awful.

Point is, they have some credibility and it's not like MTV is tossing out some shit like Saliva or Thousand Foot Krutch.
