Title: Wrestlemania Survey

jamiegeist - January 31, 2006 01:50 AM (GMT)
Saw this on a site from some guy's column, and thought it would be fun for each of us to fill in:

My favorite WrestleMania performer: Bret Hart. He gets the nod from me mainly based off of two matches, those being X and XIII. But damn if they aren't probably the two best matches in the history of Wrestlemania. I also have always loved the Tag Title Match from VII and the IC Title Match vs Piper from VIII. A very good Ironman match to go along with some other title matches helps land him atop this easily with me.

My favorite WrestleMania match: WWF Title - Randy Savage v Ric Flair, Wrestlemania VIII. I just loved this entire feud, and everything Flair did when he first got to WWF. The photos of Liz in WWF magazine was a great touch, and Savage played (?) the pyscho husband so well. They had a very fun, great match with a surprise finish that was so simple, yet awesome on the grand stage.

My favorite WrestleMania: Wrestlemania XVII. I have to give it to X-Seven, just for sentimental value alone. It remains the only PPV I've ever attended, and I feel pretty good about that, since people continue to arguably call it the best PPV of all time. I'm not ready to say that, but I know it was a damn fun weekend, with a great TLC Match, Benoit/Angle, Rock/Austin, Triple H/Taker. Just a solid fun card and day.

My Favorite WM Moment: Randy Savage and Miss Elizibeth reuniting. Wrestlemania VII. An awesome match just comes to a finish, and the frickin Macho Man has just lost a career match. Sensational Sherri starts kicking the shit out of him, realizing she is suddenly out of a job, when Liz comes running down the aisle and tosses her. Savage's reactions and facials are still one of the best things I've ever seen in wrestling. The cutaways to women crying in the audience were so awesome as well. Before the days of "sports entertainment", they did something more entertaining than they could ever accomplish today.

Best WrestleMania ever: Wrestlemania XVII. I'll stick with X-seven for the card alone. The fact that it was mostly executed to perfection just helps even more. a rapid crowd of 65,000 and the two top stars of the era, Rock and Austin, going at it one last time just made this a wonderful show.

Worst WrestleMania ever: Wrestlemania XV. Just a clusterfuck of nothingness. They switched a bunch of titles around just before the show, had nothing booked in advanced, and generally just epitomized the Vince Russo era in the WWF. I really hate this show, even more so than IX.

Best WrestleMania Match: Bret Hart v Owen Hart, Wrestlemania X. This edges out Austin/Hart from 13, and I can't even say why. I love both matches, but for different reasons. This match just felt so pure and perfect to me, and I absolutely LOVE the blocked victory roll for the finish. The fact that it was the opener somehow makes it even more special.

Worst WrestleMania match: Undertaker v Giant Gonzalez, WM IX. I wanted to avoid "special attraction" matches like the Brawl 4 All, Akebono, etc. This match here just sucked balls. El Gigante couldn't even fuckin move in the ring. And he knocked him out with a towel covered in chloroform. Even when I was like 13 I was going "what the fuck is this shit".

Best WrestleMania performer of all time: Bret Hart. As mentioned above. Not much different here. He is my personal preference, and I believe the best overall.

Most Underrated WrestleMania performer of all time: Randy Savage. Hard to call him underrated when he has an arguable ***** match at WMIII v Steamboat, but I don't think the Macho Man would get mentioned by most people in a discussion of Mania studs. The Steamboat match, his Tourney win at IV, a decent to good match with Hogan at V, the Career match at VII, a great world title match at VIII, and some interesting things to close out the Mania career still gives him a great Wrestlemania career.

Most Underrated WrestleMania match of all time: IC Title Match - Roddy Piper v Bret Hart, Wrestlemania VIII. I know this match usually gets pretty high marks, but again, I don't think it would be in the discussion of 'best mania matches of all time' by most people. I actually love this match, and love the story they told within it. From the pre-match interview all the way to the moment Piper decides to not crack Bret with the bell, this match is very pretty, and has a wonderful finish with Bret kicking off the turnbuckle for the sleeper-pin.

Have at it. I actually just had alot of fun putting this thing together.

My favorite WrestleMania performer: Hulk Hogan - This is personal bias mainly, but he had pretty good/great matches at WM V, VI, and VII, was part of the most important match in wrestling history at the time of WM III, and WM X-8 was only memorable for Hogan/Rock.

My favorite WrestleMania match: Bret Hart vs. Steve Austin; WrestleMania 13. Simply a great match playing off emotions to perfection better than any other match that I can think of at a WM. The double turn is the icing on the cake, though.

My favorite WrestleMania: WrestleMania X-Seven. I told this story before, but I was pretty much dead asleep with a 104 temperature the day of WM. I still managed to mark the fuck out for everything and jumped around like nothing was wrong with me. Bigest adrenaline rush for a show I've ever had.

My Favorite WM Moment: Benoit winning the title at WM XX. I was literally screaming at TV "TAP! TAP! TAP!" before jumping up in the sky and nearly killing myself on the ceiling fan.

Best WrestleMania ever: WrestleMania X-Seven once again. I don't know if I posted my review here, but everything of importance was pretty good-awesome, and the only bad match was a 2:00 "womens" title match.

Worst WrestleMania ever: WrestleMania XV. What the FUCK? Really, WM IX had shit booking, but WM XV, during the time they were popping 7.0 ratings, they managed to fuck it up as bad as possible without having a McMahon win the World Title.

Best WrestleMania Match: Bret Hart vs. Steve Austin.

Worst WrestleMania match: Worst high profile? Too many selections, but Randy Savage/George Steele for the IC Title at WM 2 was pretty fucking awful.

Best WrestleMania performer of all time: Randy Savage. Other than WM 2, he has a pretty damn good list. WM 3: Steamboat classic. WM 4: Wrestled 4 (short) matches in one night. WM 5: great with Hogan. WM 6: Ok, this sucked. WM 7: Warrior's best match ever. WM 8: Great match with Flair. WM 10: Swan song carrying Crush to a good match.

Most Underrated WrestleMania performer of all time: Hulk Hogan. He WAS WrestleMania from 1985-1992, yet his ring work from the 90's through present seems to make everyone think he was a shit worker his entire career.

Most Underrated WrestleMania match of all time: Hulk Hogan vs. Sgt. Slaughter. I don't know what was in the Kool-Aid, since Slaughter was pretty damn bad during his 1990-1992 run, but the structure of the match was laid out pretty well, and the hot crowd was a good boost.

Colcollazo - January 31, 2006 03:12 AM (GMT)
My favorite WrestleMania performer: Easy, Bret Hart. He had my favorite WWE match with Austin, the match with Owen and a great match with Piper.

My favorite WrestleMania match: No doubt about it, it's Bret/Austin. Just an all around classic match.

My favorite WrestleMania: WrestleMania X. Around this time I was still new to wrestling and I loved this show and still do. Two classic matches, along with Crush/Macho which wasn't bad and MOM/Quebecers which was fun. Plus, it was in MSG and Bret won the title to finish off the PPV.

My Favorite WM Moment: Bret winning the title again at WM 10 or Austin winning the title at WM 14. These two were my big favorites heading into Mania those years, I marked out both times and I loved it.

Best WrestleMania ever: WrestleMania X. To this day there isn't a Mania with two matches that I've rated ****+.

Worst WrestleMania ever: WrestleMania XV. I honestly like 9 and 11 better this card. Terrible, terrible card.

Best WrestleMania Match: Bret Hart vs. Steve Austin

Worst WrestleMania match: Yeah, I gotta say Gonzales vs Taker too. It makes me wonder why Taker was booked against so many useless, terrible working stiffs back in the day.

Best WrestleMania performer of all time: Probably Randy Savage. Had a very good match with Steamboat, great match with Hogan, had another one with Warrior and another one with Flair.

Most Underrated WrestleMania performer of all time: Maybe Hogan, eveyone's seen his match with Warrior but no one gives him too much credit for his matches with Macho and Slaughter. Plus, he had some solid performances at 18 and 19 as well.

Most Underrated WrestleMania match of all time: Yeah, probably Hogan/Slaughter. It's a pretty solid match that no one has ever talked about too much.

WM X-Seven says hello. :D

WM X was pretty crappy other than the 2 big matches, and even then, the Ladder Match is one of the most overrated in the last 15 years.

WM X also had a pretty lame mixed-tag, boring women's title, worthless squash match (a 10-man tag scrapped for time, but it happend on Raw and sucked), and two sub-par (at best) world title matches.

Owen/Bret is a classic, Randy/Crush is good, and MOM/Quebecers wasn't as bad as I expected, but it doesn't really hold up well against other WM's, like VII, XVI, or X-Seven.

Colcollazo - January 31, 2006 03:24 AM (GMT)
WM X-7 was good but it's not as good as people say it is. TLC was fun live, but it's one of those matches that get worse and worse each you watch it. The Hardcore 3 way was fun but nothing more than that. Austin/Rock was a classic, Angle/Benoit was good and HHH/Taker was okay. I don't remember anything else from the show.

And WM 2000? That show was bad man. And WM VII was good but it wasn't better than WM X for me.

Scrooge McSuck - January 31, 2006 03:29 AM (GMT)
WM 2000:

- Surprisingly good BBM/Bull v. Goldfather/D'Lo
- Hardcore Battle Royale was a wonderful waste of time... if that makes sense.
- The Ladder Match was a great spotfest
- Benoit/Angle/Jericho was pretty good
- Fatal-Four Way was pretty good despite the shit booking finish.

WrestleMania VII:
- Great Warrior/Savage match
- Very good Hogan/Slaughter
- Very good Nasties/Foundation
- Good (but overrated) Perfect/BBM
- Entertaining Roberts/Martel

WrestleMania X-Seven
- Awesome Rock/Austin
- Awesome spotfest in TLC 2
- Great Benoit/Angle
- Very good McMahon match (the workrate sucked, but it was more of a storyline match)
- Good UT/Triple H (but overrated)
- Good hardcore titlematch
- good Jericho/Regal opener
- Nostalgic battle royale

WM VII is the less of the better, but it still holds up well.

Colcollazo - January 31, 2006 03:48 AM (GMT)
I'll say that Angle/Benoit/Jericho was solid though. Ladder match was fun at first as those matches usually are but those type of matches don't get better the more times you watch them. And I didn't like anything else from the card.

And like I said, WM VII was good. It has a great Macho/Warrior match, a solid Hogan/Slaughter match, solid Bossman/Perfect and a good Haku & Barbarian vs The Rockers match which was better than Harts/Nasties which I don't like anyway.

To me, WM X-7 basically has Austin/Rock and Angle/Benoit.

WM X has Bret/Owen, HBK/Razor, Crush/Macho, MOM/Quebecers which was fun. Luger/Yoko wasn't bad and Bret/Yoko was a solid carryjob by Bret.

Scrooge McSuck - January 31, 2006 04:07 AM (GMT)
Yokozuna was completely blown up by that point and Hart had to sell the knee from earlier in the night. The post-match celebration hides the fact it was a rather bad match.

Edit: I forgot Rockers/Samoans from WM 7. Good call. :)

TehDoct0r - January 31, 2006 04:49 AM (GMT)
My favorite WrestleMania performer: Personally, I'd have to go with Bret Hart. I love Bret, and he's had some personal favorites of mine (vs Austin and Owen) at Mania.

My favorite WrestleMania match: Randy Savage vs Ultimate Warrior from WM7. Seriously. I don't care what they have degenerated to. I don't care that Warrior was a horrid worker and all gimmick. I don't care if Savage abused both drugs and women. This match is everything that is great about pro wrestling. My personal favorite match of all time by a large margin.

My favorite WrestleMania: WrestleMania X-Seven. For the reasons stated above, plus HHH vs Taker is was underpimped and way good. And Vince vs Shane is my biggest guilty pleasure.

My Favorite WM Moment: Benoit and Eddie at the end of XX. Meant a lot then, means more now.

Best WrestleMania ever: X. Owen vs Bret opening, and Shawn and Scott killing themselves and tons of wrestlers to come in their wake to entertain us.

Worst WrestleMania ever: I really didn't like 11. I mean come on. Look at the main event. Sure, it wasn't bad as far as celebrity involvment goes, but still. Come on. I blame that for Bam Bam's current hard times.

Best WrestleMania Match: Warrior vs Savage. Yea, I said it.

Worst WrestleMania match: I really, really didn't like Warrior vs Hunter from 12.

Best WrestleMania performer of all time: Shawn Michaels. From the early tags to TITO SANTANA~!~ to Tatanka to Razor to Diesel to Bret to Austin to Jericho to HHH/Benoit to Angle....... not a bad match among them.

Most Underrated WrestleMania performer of all time: Tito. Cause he's the most underrated person ever anywhere.

Most Underrated WrestleMania match of all time: Hart Foundation vs Nasty Boys, WM7. I can't quite put my finger on why, but I fuckin love this match, and can watch it pretty often. And it NEVER gets pimped.

jamiegeist - January 31, 2006 05:00 AM (GMT)
I am also a lover of the Nastys/Hart Foundation Tag Title Match. Not sure why either, but I really like it.

And damn that match has been coming up alot lately around here.
