AWA Heavyweight Title Match: Shinjiro Ohtani defeated Steve Corino in 20 minutes, 26 seconds with a full-nelson suplex hold for the win. Ohtani becomes the 34th AWA World Hwt. Champion in the history of the belt's lineage. The promotion noted that Ohtani became the 4th Japanese person to hold the AWA belt (with Jumbo Tsuruta, Masa Saito, & Takao Omori as the other three).

Is this an improvement?

dynamite kido - January 23, 2006 03:45 AM (GMT)
I care.

Yes, strong improvement over lazy Corino.

Big F'N Swigg - January 23, 2006 03:46 AM (GMT)
So you care that there is an AWA?

Mad Dog - January 23, 2006 05:10 AM (GMT)
I try to care but it seemed like it was brought back just so Corino could say he held the AWA Title.

prof_plague - January 23, 2006 05:24 AM (GMT)
Since when did the AWA become a promotion again?

whitemilesdavis - January 23, 2006 01:22 PM (GMT)
Zero-One bought the AWA title last year, and have set up territories around the US and Japan. It could be a really good thing for indy wrestling, and Ilike what they have done so far. Just like the old days, the champ tours the different territories and takes on their top challenger. From what I have seen, it makes for a good drawing indy show, and adds an element of excitement to the local scene. Is it a real-deal world title? No. Will it ever be? Probably not, but it is something to connect the indies and create a sense of purpose between regional indies.

The only thing that sucks is that Ric Converse was suppose to be getting a title shot on the 28th. They'll probably just go on with the Converse/ Corino match, since they kind of set up an angle on Corino's last tour. It would be nice if the new champ finished up what the old champ was doing. Ohtani in NC would be pretty incredible.

Good news for Ohtani, he deserves it.

Wasn't Colt Cabana on this show?

Yasuda, NOSAWA, Gamma, and Corino on the same show is enough to make me NOT want to see this...

Mad Dog - January 23, 2006 01:36 PM (GMT)
Seeing Yasuda, Hidaka, Corino and Fujita plus Kawada jumping is enough to make me never want to see this show.

Just to add:

Zero-One has been awful in every way possible since Hash died.

..............and it was bad when he was there.

It was passable when they had the corner on the gaijen market. That was the only positive to the company in the early days. NOAH and New Japan have totally chipped away at them over the last couple of years so there's no point to the company.

Big F'N Swigg - January 23, 2006 11:49 PM (GMT)
Just so it's said, Omori toured the US when he held the title, so it's possible Ohtani might as well. I don't know if it would be as soon as the 28th, but we won't know until then.

I honestly like the AWA so far, if just because it brought Omori in. I know he's not fucking Tanahashi or anything, but I like foreign champs being used like that.

EDIT: The reason I said Though no one really cares is because the general feeling I've got is that the AWA is a joke, and shouldn't be taken seriously. Though I agree with WMD that anything that can unify the indies a bit is good
