Title: Bad News.....

Big F'N Swigg - January 20, 2006 02:07 AM (GMT)
According to several sources, plans for a live TNA special on Spike TV for Monday 2/13 are off. Spike TV made the decision to not move forward about a week ago. I was told that TNA was willing and ready to produce the special as they saw what a major opportunity it would have been.

The proposed special, which would have been live the day after TNA's February PPV, would have fallen on the same evening WWE's Monday Night Raw will be preempted by the USA Network for the Westminster Dog Show. It now appears 2/13 will be the first Monday evening in several years with no professional wrestling programming on cable television.

According to a source at Spike TV, the decision not to produce the special was due to "logistical reasons" and future TNA specials (live or taped) are still being discussed for the future.

That's not bad news. Does TNA really want to be embarrassed by the Dog Show in the head-to-head ratings? Besides, Spike TV probably wants to see more improvements in the ratings, even if they don't mean anything to the general public. I'm sure if it got 1.0+ on a consistant basis, they might give TNA more chances.

Here's the thing: TNA doesn't give a fuck how they do in comparison to the dog show. What they want is a chance to prove they can do well on Monday nights. This doesn't mean pulling down 6.0's. It means 1.0+. They want to prove to Spike that they're just as good on Monday nights as CSI reruns

That's the evils of television networks. They don't care about chances, they want numbers, no matter how worthless they are. I'm not against a PrimeTime Special (I'm hoping to see more, if they are 2 hours), but they should worry more about pleasing the network heads with the ratings. How they can do that is a mystery, since Spike TV doesn't promote the shows, except for the 1st special, and that didn't do a thing to boost the rating from it's normal number.

It's true. I think, though, that Spike is missing out here. Wrestling fans will be channel flipping

Scrooge McSuck - January 20, 2006 02:19 AM (GMT)
Good point. I know from personal experience if I'm channel surfing and come across some wrestling, I'll watch. That's how I found MLW in 2002. Looking for something good at 1 a.m. :)

I think the problem with this first show, and the problem with specials going forward, is the lack of time to promote it. They need something set in stone about a month ahead of time to further angles towards it, promote it, and make people care.

Unfortunately, in today's day and age of Monthly (or less) PPVs, you just can't devote your month to a TV special. So they're caught in a shitty situation to me.

I would have liked to see them do a Monday Night show. If CSI didn't score such solid ratings, they might try it. But dammit, people watch their shitty network dramas.

Well, that bites.

SamoaRowe - January 22, 2006 03:54 AM (GMT)
That definitly bites. How many stupid marks will tune into USA and go "what the fuck is this dog shit" and then flip to see if any UFC is on. Wouldn't they be delighted to find some quality pro wrestling? I know I would be.

Scrooge McSuck - January 22, 2006 03:55 AM (GMT)
No marks will turn on USA to watch Raw that not, since they'll announce it during Raw they'll be postponed. LOOPHOLE!

You make my head hurt.

Oh, I am sure there are plenty of marks who will not get the message.

This is really too bad for TNA. I wish there was a better excuse other than "logistical reasons", though. What the hell does that even mean?

It means that Spike still doesn't have much faith in TNA regardless if they are doing well or not.

They don't want to deal the cash.
