Title: [WWE & TNA] Match of the Year 2006
Description: Here's an idea.
SamoaRowe - January 5, 2006 06:48 PM (GMT)
What I'd like to do is have everyone who ever reviews shows or matches make a post in this thread. Everytime you rate a match as *** or more, edit it into your list and keep a track of them. Then by at the end of the year, we'll have a great source when it comes to putting together a match of the year list.
I'll start mine with the next post, though I'd like to see the rest of you do the same.
And if Scrooge likes the idea, maybe he could pin this :D

Don't you think it'd be safe to say **** or more?
Scrooge McSuck - January 6, 2006 12:06 AM (GMT)
Not with the current crop of WWE matches. :D *** is a nice round rating for a really good match, especially for free T.V.
Scrooge McSuck - January 6, 2006 12:07 AM (GMT)
Pinned!
And here's my on-going list for 2006...
1. Kane vs. Shawn Michaels - *** (1/2/06 Raw)

Exactly. I don't envision myself seeing too many pay-per-views this year, so *** tv matches may just be my niche for 2006.
Real F'n Show - January 6, 2006 03:16 AM (GMT)
What's with the love for HBK/Kane? Has WWE put on so many bad matches lately, that THIS is considered good?
That is a retorical question by the way. It was slow and plodding and the only thing that made it decent was the "HBK can't use the superkick" story. Without that, it's boring as hell.
Anyway, I'll try and bring the ROH and Puro luv to this thread...
Scrooge McSuck - January 6, 2006 06:50 AM (GMT)
That's the thing with 3-star matches, it's hard to give a real explanation why. I just enjoyed it for a free TV match, and my bias is canceled out, because I really hate HBK (duh) and really like Kane (duh x2).
prof_plague - January 7, 2006 04:19 AM (GMT)
Batista/Rey Mysterio vs. MNM : Steel Cage - Jan. 6
Kurt Angle vs. Rob Van Dam - June 27
Colcollazo - January 7, 2006 03:29 PM (GMT)
Cena/Angle was better than Michaels/Kane, and that wasn't *** either. So in 2006 so far I'd say Benoit/Orton and Batista/Rey vs MNM were at that level.
Scrooge McSuck - January 7, 2006 05:54 PM (GMT)
Cena/Angle wasn't good. It was Angle doing a million suplexes and the crowd boo'ing Cena out of the building.
Colcollazo - January 7, 2006 10:45 PM (GMT)
Oh no, it wasn't good but it was just a fun, solid match. Angle throwing his suplexes was good, Daivari interfering always made sense since he's Angle's manager and Cena did a good blade job at the end. This match really should've been given more time.
Scrooge McSuck - January 7, 2006 10:58 PM (GMT)
Judging from crowd reactions, it shouldn't have happend at all. On my personal scale of rating, the match constantly hovered between * (Cen'as offense) and ** (Angle), so call it *1/2. Cena's shit is old and boring (and out-dated. This is 2006, not 1986), and Angle really didn't do much to make it a good match. Just the usual.

You had me until there. Not sure what you meant exactly.
Scrooge McSuck - January 9, 2006 07:09 AM (GMT)
He wrestles as if he were going by 1986 standards of wrestling. You know, punch punch punch slam punch fist drop punch punch slam firemans carry punch.
That's pretty much Cena's entire moveset, and he does it with no emotion, except for his stupid five-knuckle shuffle crap. That's almost as bad as the People's Elbow, but at least he never pinned someone with it. Yet.
prof_plague - January 9, 2006 07:16 AM (GMT)
I still don't get people's obsessions with the idea of a "move set"; save move set for CAW, but not for real wrestling matches. Sometimes you can have wrestlers with a great move set who are still bad wrestlers because they can't tell a story during the match.
Scrooge McSuck - January 9, 2006 07:29 AM (GMT)
Cena can't tell a story and has a pathetic moveset, so he loses either way. A firemans carry slam hasn't been a credible finishing move since Mike Rotundo used it (except he combined it with an airplane spin), and Cena is actually beating everyone with it.
I think if you're gonna wrestle 20+ minute PPV matches every month, it would be a good idea to learn how to wrestle. Punching people is as basic as you can get, especially if you do it all the time.
prof_plague - January 9, 2006 08:45 PM (GMT)
But what about the days when a finisher could have been a suplex, fisherman suplex, sleeper hold, back-breaker, bear hug, elbow drop, leg drop, lariat, et cetera. Aren't those credible moves? I think the F-U is ahead of some of those moves. As long as Cena drops with his finisher, it looks like a great impact hit against the mat.
Scrooge McSuck - January 9, 2006 09:13 PM (GMT)
Maybe if Cena weren't 6'1" and 240 lbs., I might buy that move as a finisher. But it would work much better with a hoss like Mark Henry. Cena should just use some gay suplex. :D

If only they would call it......the "gay suplex".
Real F'n Show - January 10, 2006 12:34 AM (GMT)
Joey Styles: "Release gay suplex from Cena, no bridge, all impact."

Uhhh, Aries/Strong/Shelley v Styles/Daniels/Sabin from 1/7/06 Impact. I'll go ***.
Scrooge McSuck - January 12, 2006 10:33 AM (GMT)
CRAAAAAAAAAP! I forgot to tape Impact this past week to see that. :(

If it makes you feel better, I forgot to tape it too.
Hopefully when TNA does a Best of the X-Division Vol. 2, it will be on it.

HA-HA!!!
jamiegeist - January 12, 2006 04:50 PM (GMT)
It probably won't make a best-of. It just wasn't long enough. But go check out pwtorrents. I bet it is on there somewhere.
Colcollazo - January 14, 2006 05:15 PM (GMT)
For WWE so far it's...
1. Batista/Rey Mysterio vs. MNM - SmackDown! 1/6/06
2. Chris Benoit vs. Randy Orton - SmackDown! 1/13/06
SamoaRowe - January 17, 2006 05:45 PM (GMT)
I have that Rey/Bastista vs MNM match on tape somewhere and I have been meaning to watch it.
I can't say for sure, but it sounded like a match I would have enjoyed.
Real F'n Show - January 17, 2006 07:12 PM (GMT)
Edge/Flair TLC and Angle/Michaels IV were both ***, I'd say.

I edited both of those into my list in the second post.
Which is what I'm hoping everyone else is doing.

Yep.
Colcollazo - January 17, 2006 10:35 PM (GMT)
Angle/Michaels IV was, not Edge/Flair. So far in WWE it's...
1. Batista/Rey Mysterio vs. MNM - SmackDown! 1/6/06
2. Chris Benoit vs. Randy Orton - SmackDown! 1/13/06
3. Kurt Angle vs. Shawn Michaels - Raw 1/16/06
Scrooge McSuck - January 19, 2006 08:34 PM (GMT)
Finally got around to watching Benoit/Orton from last week's Smackdown, and on first viewing, I'd probably put it at ***1/2. I disagree with giving Angle/HBK a ***+ rating, since commercials butchered the match (only went about 15:00 with 2 breaks), and it was rest-heavy IIRC.
Real F'n Show - January 19, 2006 11:24 PM (GMT)
Yep, Orton/Benoit's the best match I've seen so far this year. Awesome matwork, Benoit bringing the moveset (fisherman's suplex bridge, anyone?), and Orton bumping his ass off along with his great selling and facial expressions. Probably Orton's best match ever, including his one with Foley. ***1/4 I'd say.
Angle/Michaels seemed like the finish of a PPV match, with tons of reversals/playing off other spots, without the beginning part of the match that their PPV matches have had. However the reversals seemed a lot cleaner this time and it looks like they developed quite the chemistry. ***
Edge/Flair was a lot better than I was expecting. They didn't go too overkill aside from the three main bumps (splash off ladder thru table, superplex off ladder, Edge falling off the ladder thru the table) but take those three parts out and it's just weapon shots. Finish was pretty bad too. A fucking punch knocks Flair off the ladder? Still decent for a TLC match involving Ric Fucking Flair. ***
Colcollazo - January 20, 2006 02:40 AM (GMT)
Scrooge, I guess you'd just cream yourself to watch a match with complete non-stop action as it looks like resting REALLY fucks up a match for you. It was a lot more fun than Kane/Michaels from a couple of weeks ago which was really boring, and a match that you consider good.
I didn't like Edge/Flair too much, but I'll admit it was one of Flair's better performances since coming back to the company 4 years ago. It was good how he worked the climbing spot at the end of the match, eventhough some say it was bad that he was moving so slow but that was the purpose of the spot.
Scrooge McSuck - January 20, 2006 02:51 AM (GMT)
I guess you missed the "commercials" part. 6 minutes of commercials during a 15 minute period hurts a match, no matter how good. It interupts the flow of a match, and it wasn't that good to begin with. It was like the first and last 5 minutes of a big 30 minute match.
prof_plague - January 20, 2006 03:33 AM (GMT)
Did anyone watch NYR? If so, would you call any *** matches on there?
Scrooge McSuck - January 20, 2006 03:45 AM (GMT)
Probably not. the only match that probably did was HHH/Show, or MAYBE Trish/Mickie, but with WWE's Women's Division, those ratings are very rare indeed.
