Title: OAO Classic Cartoons and Television Discussion

Scrooge McSuck - December 15, 2005 04:00 AM (GMT)
Inspired by the "hot" discussion going on in the DVD Collection/Recent Purchases topic, this one can be home to those of us clinging on to the past like Rob Feinstein on a 11 year old boys genitalia.

When we last left our heroes, I was making fun of the Power Rangers cheesy-ness and S.T. was saying something about how Captain N' and the Mario Cartoons should be released on DVD.

Wasn't King Hippo in Captain N? And dammit, the Mike Tyson's Punch-Out Characters should've had their own TV Show. :P

S.T. Strickler - December 15, 2005 04:08 AM (GMT)
Yeah, King Hippo was on the Captain N show, as one of Mother Brain's bumbling sidekicks, along with Eggplant Wizard.

And you want more Power Ranger cheeziness? How about everybody pumping their fist in unison at times?

Jason: Alright guys, let's do this!
Everybody: Right! (Pumps fist in unison)

Scrooge McSuck - December 15, 2005 04:09 AM (GMT)
Eggplant Wizard? I don't recall that character. Was he made out of egglant, and was a wizard? :D

S.T. Strickler - December 15, 2005 04:11 AM (GMT)
Eggplant Wizard was from the King Icarus game.

Scrooge McSuck - December 15, 2005 04:13 AM (GMT)
Never heard of that either.

(looks at DVD's on table) I demand the release of the complete series of Wish Kid! Who can forget the memorable episode where they mocked the 1919 World Series Scandal? Choppy animation, horrible voice-overs, and unoriginal plots need to be remembered forever!

Ugh... don't remind me. Just for kicks, I did not-so-nice things with my Power Ranger dolls. :D

Now does he ring a bell?

Scrooge McSuck - December 15, 2005 04:17 AM (GMT)
Kinda. It's been forever since I've seen that show (I think 1991 was the last time). Didn't it run along with one of the Mario Shows?

And that reminds me... I forgot what network it was, but after Super Mario World aired, there was another cartoon with Michael Jordan, Bo Jackson, and Wayne Gretzky. I think it was called Pro-Stars or All-Stars, but I can't remember, and my last visit to TVtome about the show came up with zero results.

S.T. Strickler - December 15, 2005 04:21 AM (GMT)
Ah yes, Pro Stars.. I actually watched that.

Scrooge McSuck - December 15, 2005 04:23 AM (GMT)
The animation made Gretzky look a lot more good looking than he really was. And damn, which of those three doesn't belong? Air Jordan, the Great One, or the guy who was on the KC Royals?

S.T. Strickler - December 15, 2005 04:26 AM (GMT)
You mean dual sport star, Bo Jackson? Bo knows.... diddly.

Scrooge McSuck - December 15, 2005 04:28 AM (GMT)
I guess they used him because it was cheaper than animating two more guys to represent the NFL and MLB each. I'm still wondering how they found the time to fight crime by dribbling basketballs and slapping pucks at the same time. You'd think with the schedule of all four major sports, it would be impossible for all 3 to be in the same place at once.

S.T. Strickler - December 15, 2005 04:30 AM (GMT)
Remember, when you're a Super Hero, you have time for everything.

Scrooge McSuck - December 15, 2005 04:34 AM (GMT)
 Oh well... since I mentioned one sports cartoon, am I alone in thinking that Mighty Ducks cartoon REALLY sucked? Te first movie was good, the second OK (no Canadian hockey team, but a JAMAICAN TEAM?!), and the third not too bad. But the cartoon is about actual hockey playing DUCKS. Oy...

S.T. Strickler - December 15, 2005 04:37 AM (GMT)
Probably heard of the show, but I never watched it.

Now maybe you can help me with this show, 'cause I don't remember the name of it.. It might've been on NBC or Fox on Saturday mornings between '91-'93 somewhere. The only thing I remembered was two people would be playing Super Nintendo against each other, but the screen would be flipped upside down and they would have a time limit.

jamiegeist - December 15, 2005 04:38 AM (GMT)
You know what cartoon I used to love? The Hanna-Barbara one where like, the characters were all playing games against each other, and racing, and shit like that. It was like, olympics or some shit. Had Grape Ape, uhhh, I think the Flintstones. Shit, I don't remember....who was on this stuff?

Mad Dog - December 15, 2005 04:38 AM (GMT)
Power Rangers was an odd show in that the fight scenes and the space scenes were from the Japanese version and everything else was shot with American actors.

I've thought about buying the He-Man set at Bestbuy a couple of times. I want Thundercats but those are expensive. I wouldn't seeing Voltron and the other Sunday Super Show shows other than Inhumanoids getting released on DVD.

Scrooge McSuck - December 15, 2005 04:43 AM (GMT)
The show about Hanna-Barbera characters competing in various things was the Scoody Doo Laff-A-Lympics.

Don't know on the show you are refering to, S.T, but it sounds familiar.

Was it something like Wacky Races? Haven't seen the show, but it's the only one that comes to mind.

I'm pretty sure it might've been on NBC, a couple hours before Super Mario Bros. 3.. I think, but not positive.

It was probably Video Power. Did the winner run through kind of a mini-maze grabbing games at the end?

Oh man, He-Man brings me back. I have a ton of figures, though my favorite is still the angry lobster dude. He was the mack.

Mad Dog - December 15, 2005 04:52 AM (GMT)
I remember the He-Man slime and how funky your hands would feel after playing with it.

Definitely wasn't that.. It was around the time of the Super Nintendo's debut, and I the only thing I remember is that at the end of the show, the screen would be flipped upside down and two kids would be playing Super Nintendo against each other.

Scrooge McSuck - December 15, 2005 04:57 AM (GMT)
Maybe it was a variation of Bozo the Clown? :D Hmmm... now you got me thinking about this show. Now it has me thinking about another show that mixed live action C-level kid actors and cartoons.

Mad Dog - December 15, 2005 04:59 AM (GMT)
I'm not sure then. My cartoon knowledge takes a nosedive starting around 1992.

The only things I can think of off of the top of my head are Video Power and Gamepro and there's no way it was Gamepro as that was on CBS and on around 11 on Saturday.

Scrooge McSuck - December 15, 2005 05:01 AM (GMT)
Speaking of video games, who could ever forget the awesomeness of Nick Arcade? Guide Mikey through the old west, outer space, the old folks retirement home... then play inside a video game!

Mad Dog - December 15, 2005 05:03 AM (GMT)
I watch that on Nick Gas from time to time and I want to fucking murder the host. The only cool part is the end thing though I've never taken the time to figure out how they did that.

I miss the gameshow that used to be on Fox. I don't remember much of it or even the game. I think it was called Funhouse.

Yeah, I don't even want to know what was in it.

But man, going back and watching that cartoon now....not just cheesy, but vaguely disturbing, you know?

Scrooge McSuck - December 15, 2005 05:05 AM (GMT)
He-Man was kinda tooty-fruity.

I still don't know how they did the super-game for Nick Arcade. God damn puzzling. Nick G&S really fucked themselves up, taking off all the good shows (regular Double Dare, Wild & Crazy Kids, etc.) for the crap on these days.

Mad Dog - December 15, 2005 05:06 AM (GMT)
I hated the Cartoon Network version. It did nothing for me. I can still kind of watch the old He-Man's from a nostalgia point of view. But it was really outclassed by Transformers and a lot of other cartoons.

The car Voltron show was also written better than the lion Voltron show. Robotrek kicked ass as well.

jamiegeist - December 15, 2005 05:49 AM (GMT)
I fuckin love NICK GAS. The wife and I get a bit addicted at times. But yeah, the only thing worth a shit we ever watch is Double Dare, and the 17 variations of it, and then Legends of the Hidden Temple. We just make fun of how fuckin stupid these kids were, and the horrible shitty prizes they got.

Oh, and that show where they like, trashed rooms and found shit. The host on their is the biggest douche, and he does this really high girly laugh. Had me fuckin crackin up one day.

And I had the psycho lobster guy too, and still do. Also have Moss-man (nasty as hell now) and some guy who sticks to things, and a snake-like thing that shoots water. And a bunch of others. Suprisingly, those survived in a box in my garage, yet no wrestling figures made it out alive.

Scrooge McSuck - December 15, 2005 05:52 AM (GMT)
Finders Keepers had the host with the girly laugh (and looked like he'd rather be anywhere else).

I loved making fun of the kids on LOTHT looking like pussies with hairless boney legs, since I keep forgeting most are like 10 years old and thus don't have hairy arms or legs yet. OLMEC doesn't hold a candle to X'tapalapaketle, though.

eStragand - December 15, 2005 06:54 AM (GMT)
You guys had it good. For years, all we got was the same old Looney Tunes, Scooby-Doo and Woody Woodpecker re-runs. Around here, it was BIG NEWS when "Superfriends" came on to afternoon cartoons in 1982. Then slowly, afternoon cartoons became the place for first-run shows. But for years, it was always "good stuff on Saturdays and re-runs all week long"

To clear/confirm some things:

- It was indeed Laff-a-Lympics. I think it came out the same year as the 76 Olympics in Montreal. They had two babyface teams, the Yogi Yahoo-eys and the Scooby Doobies. Then they had the heel team, the Really Rottens.

Scooby Doobies were weird, because they had Shaggy AND That Guy From Speedy Buggy Who Looked Like Shaggy, But With Goggles. They had Babu the Fat Gay Genie, along with Dyno-Mutt and Blue Falcon. Keeping with kayfabe, I think they'd bring up that Dyno-Mutt, Scooby-Doo and Scooby-Dum were all related. I think JabberJaw was on the team as well. Plus, they had Captain fuckin' Caveman and his bimbos! I've heard that Hong Kong Phooey was also on the team, but I don't remember seeing him. This team was mostly the semi-serious adventure/mystery cartoons.

Yogi Yahoo-eys were Yogi Bear and the "classic" Hanna-Barbera characters.. Huckleberry Hound, Cindy, Boo-Boo, Mr Jinx, Augie Doggie and Daddy and a few newer guys like Grape Ape. Quick Draw McGraw was on the team, but I don't think Babba Louie was. This stable actually stuck together, as they'd appear in "Yogi's Ark" and "Yogi's Space Race"-- two more "all-star team-up" type shows. These guys were the slapstick wacky animal cartoons.

The Really Rottens were led by Dastardly and Muttley (the evil dog with the muffled laugh). The rest of the team was rounded out with rarely seen "villains" and a few new heels....like the Octopus (who was NOT Squiddly Diddly). They even had HILLBILLIES!

The commentators were SnagglePuss (one of the few openly gay cartoon characters) and the rarely-seen Mildew Wolf. Sometimes the HEEL team would win! Amazingly, the shows resembled the real-life "Celebrity Olympics" which ran in various forms during the 70's and 80's.

Also, I coulda' sworn that occassionally a "special guest" would suit up for a team. I think I remember seeing Choo-Choo from "Top Cat" on there, once. I might be confusing it with another "Yogi" series, though.

Laff-a-Lympics was the second "all-star/team-up" Hanna-Barbera show. They also had "Wacky Races" in the late 60's. Same kind of formula, only it revolved around characters with distinctive gimmicky race cars. Most notably, the prissy Penelope Pitstopp, 7 Al Capone-ish midgets (the Ant Hill Mob), and Dastardly and Muttley. I think the evil HILLBILLIES got their start, here as well.

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe
Teela had the best caboose of any cartoon broad. But I remember being disappointed and embarassed when the cartoon came out. During the year or so before the cartoon aired, the toys and their accompanying mini-books had a very dark tone. They were more like old Thor comics--the ones based in Asgard. No King, no Prince Adam and most importantly, no Orko. As soon as the show came out, Master of the Universe wasn't cool anymore. It was the first of my toys that I packed up and shoved in the basement. Instead of Conan the Barbarian, He-Man was a Gay Blonde Shazam.

Bozo the Clown
He scared the living SHIT out of me as a wee lad. But I would watch him on WGN when I had the chicken pox. Some of his skits with the other clown were actually kinda' funny. I would always watch the "Grand! Prize! Game!" while waiting for the shower to heat up in the mornings. I was a senior in high school and I remember someone brought up the Grand! Prize! Game! in an open class discussion. Turned out, almost EVERYBODY in the class watched it every morning. That was hilarious.

Actually it wasn't really Dastardly and Muttley. They were ripoff characters for whatever reasons.

There was actually a more modern Whacky Racers done on the Disney Channel's Shake, Rattle and Go or Roll, don't remember the name totally. This one say Yogi's stable racing instead with Datardly and Muttley still around. I think it was actually the superior show.

jamiegeist - December 15, 2005 07:29 AM (GMT)
Thanks for the info on Laff-a-Lympics. And yeah, that was definitely the show, and that shit took me back. I remember not seeing it on too often, but I loved every time it really would come on.

I'm embarrassed to say that I used to sleep over at my cousin's house, and he would set his alarm for like 6 in the morning on saturday, just so we could get up to watch......Care Bears. No clue why, but we literally did it every Saturday for what seemed like probably 6 months to a year. Thank god we're both married now, or I would wonder. His house ruled, cause he had NES and had Gyromite, with the weird little controller thing. No one ever knows what I'm talking about when I mention that, so hmmm...maybe I'm fuckin nuts.

Mad Dog - December 15, 2005 07:52 AM (GMT)
I have Gyromite.

It's kind of sad looking at the program guide these days. Channels don't even show morning cartoons before school anymore and there's barely any afternoon ones. Saturday is equally as pitiful.

I miss the USA Express I think it was called. It started out with Hanna Barbara stuff but eventually they got a decent lineup with the Ghostbusters cartoon and some others. I miss Sci-Fi's animation lineup too. The new Gigantor cartoon was pretty good and they even had a comic book review show for about 5 years on Friday.

I have Boomerang so I still get a lot of the oldies. That group that did the Pink Panther cartoons did some of the most racist cartoons I've ever seen. I actually think I enjoy Looney Tunes even more after the PC movement of the 90s.

I'm also thrilled that they decided to put Danger Mouse out on DVD. May Count Duckula follow.

jamiegeist - December 15, 2005 07:55 AM (GMT)
YES! With the special controller thingie with the big (I think) red and blue buttons or whatever?

Mad Dog - December 15, 2005 07:58 AM (GMT)
I haven't played it in a long time. I do remember it took me forever to figure out how to make the controls work.

I almost murdered my cousin over Legend of Zelda. It took me 2 months of solid work and all I had left were the last 2 levels and the fucker erased my game.

S.T. Strickler - December 15, 2005 01:47 PM (GMT)
I remember a few months back, I beat Legend of Zelda 2 for the first time. That game can be hard as a you-know-what.

I remember Nick Arcade coming on during the afternoon on Nick GAS. I pretty much make fun of the people with the crappy video game skills, especially when they waste 5 seconds at the beginning of the "Video Challenge" by just standing around.

Scrooge McSuck - December 15, 2005 04:20 PM (GMT)
Darn you for bringing up the Ghostbusters cartoon. I'd watch that every day along with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Denver: The Last Dinosaur. :( Where have all the good cartoons gone?!

S.T. Strickler - December 15, 2005 04:21 PM (GMT)
Down the drain, and replaced by lame crap.
