Title: Byte This with Coach

jamiegeist - October 15, 2005 04:06 AM (GMT)
So, just watched my first ever episode of Byte This, and it is incredibly enjoyable. Coach goes on a semi-shoot fest, basically on the internet for saying he is incapable of doing a broadcast just cause he isn't good ol' JR. It is really a great show, with Lawler joining by phone and the two of them discussing the importance of actual play-by-play in professional wrestling.

I'm really looking forward to these two carrying the broadcast, and I'm so glad JR is gone. King is gonna have to pretty much play face now though.

Is that a first? Play-by-Play guy as Heel and the analyst as face?

Scrooge McSuck - October 15, 2005 03:51 PM (GMT)
...JERRY LAWLER is talking about the importance of play-by-play? The man who ignores every fucking womens match to jerk off about "puppies"? The man who obviously makes any woman who joins commentary uncomfortable about his rude comments (most notably Molly and Trish)?

Yeah, I'm gonna fucking take anything that jerk says seriously.

And Coach fucking sucks. He's sucked when he was hosting Livewire in 2000, he sucked doing Heat since 2002, and he sucked since he joined Raw. He's better off being a heel manager, because he sure as shit can't keep my attention for 90 minutes without wanting to stab myself in the ears.

jamiegeist - October 15, 2005 05:50 PM (GMT)
Why does he suck? He is a great heel announcer. He puts over the angles, he doesn't rediculously over-react to everything that happens, and he plays that important 'the heel is always right" role that has been around forever. He is great at what he does.

Big F'N Swigg - October 16, 2005 04:55 AM (GMT)
He used to be really good, but his quality when down with the heel turn

Scrooge McSuck - October 16, 2005 05:50 AM (GMT)
Have you ever watched Heat? He spends more time putting himself over than paying attention to actual matches. He was far better as a babyface, because he seemed to actually care about the product then. He still wasn't very good, but at least with someone like Raven carrying him on PBP, he seemed tolerable.

jamiegeist - October 16, 2005 07:13 AM (GMT)
Have I ever watched Heat? No.

And I can hardly blame Coach with having to put himself over. Thats his character, and the one I'm sure Vince wants him playing, even during matches, cause Vince is like that.

Thats quite a harsh critisicm in the world of "sports entertainment". I think he is great at what he does, and that character is part of that. He does a great job getting over the new talent and selling what is happening. Perhaps. Just my opinion.

Coach: I'm the greatest! I rule! Oh look, something happend! Did I tell you how I be clubbin' last night? I'm the coach! Oh, someone won. I rule!

Yeah, Coach really puts over people... and no, thats not an exageration. Coach actually was talking like that. Put himself over for 5 minutes, and talked about the match for 10 seconds.

jamiegeist - October 16, 2005 04:45 PM (GMT)
When you say he actually "was" talking like that, do you mean in the past? Cause he doesn't do anything like that on RAW for the last 2 months.

Scrooge McSuck - October 16, 2005 04:56 PM (GMT)
He did it on Heat the last week it was on Spike TV.

Big F'N Swigg - October 16, 2005 05:27 PM (GMT)
He has been quite miserable on Heat, but let's give him until tomorrow night before we really start to toast him

D.A.V.E. - October 16, 2005 08:07 PM (GMT)
Byte This should be mandatory viewing for anyone who blindly bashes the product, or blindly supports everything (like myself). I fucking love the show.

But I haven't seen last weeks yet

Scrooge McSuck - October 17, 2005 07:19 PM (GMT)
I'll give Coach a shot at the "big show", but the last few times he did it with Lawler sans J.R., he hasn't been too good.

SamoaRowe - October 17, 2005 08:15 PM (GMT)
I occasionally watch Byte This if the guests are interesting and if I'm bored enough. I admit, it's been a while, but watching WWE personalities defend themselves against the internet never gets old.

Scrooge McSuck - October 17, 2005 08:16 PM (GMT)
It's usually guys like Trips and BJL that do that, because they know they suck.

TheGreatWhiteChoate - October 17, 2005 09:35 PM (GMT)
Coach sucks, Lawler sucks, JR sucked, Cole sucks, Tazz sucks....let's face it, this isn't the cream of the crop we're talking about. They're not there to be actual commentators, they're there to do what Vince tells them to do: push things. Debating their merit as commentators is dumb, because that's not what they are. Get me a real play by play announcer and I might actually listen to them.

Scrooge McSuck - October 18, 2005 12:18 AM (GMT)
Watch old wrestling tapes of WCW and WWF. Jim Ross certainly didn't suck. He just got lazy.

jamiegeist - October 18, 2005 12:19 AM (GMT)
Thank you. Very well put.

EW! I got jacked and put my comment in the wrong place. I was referring to Choates comment.

Actually, Almost all of them are good when they're not being told what to say. But they've all got "Schiavone/Heenan syndrome." There talent has been usurped by the people backstage.

Scrooge McSuck - October 18, 2005 04:18 AM (GMT)
The commentary tonight was brutal. There was no J.R. to overhype the faces winning the big matches ("Bah gawd, Kane wins! The Big Red Machine!"), and as expected, Coach tried his hardest to put himself over instead of the actual wrestlers. Lawler seemed as if he'd rather be somewhere else but Raw tonight.

Mad Dog - October 18, 2005 04:47 AM (GMT)
The guy that does the recaps for the Observer site went out of his way to rip on Coach for his lack of skills during every segment.

Scrooge McSuck - October 18, 2005 04:49 AM (GMT)
Link me~! I love me some Coach bashing, especially when it's justified.

Mad Dog - October 18, 2005 05:08 AM (GMT)

Scrooge McSuck - October 18, 2005 05:22 AM (GMT)
I can't argue with any of his points. Coach fucking sucks. Turn him face again, or make him a manager. As a face, a good heel can carry him on commentary, and at least he feels comfortable enough on the stick~! to sound believeable as a non-wrestling personality.

jamiegeist - October 18, 2005 05:32 AM (GMT)
Its like Choate's post up above didn't exist or something. "The Coach" doesnt suck because he isnt talented at what he does. He is playing a role. Vince wants him to play this up that he got the job at JRs expense. Vince wants him to be an on-air character and put himself over. Are you people blind, retarded, or kane?

Scrooge McSuck - October 18, 2005 05:38 AM (GMT)
Then, again, how come he sucked as much on Heat (and every other time he did commentary with Lawler on Raw)? Heat commentary is obviously dubbed in after the taping, so it's not like Coach has McMahon in his ear all the time. Usually for B-Shows, the guys are given a "talk about this" list, not being fed lines through their headsets.

I'd also like to point out the numerous times during Raw where Coach was talking in a confused and/or dull manner, especially when the lead broadcaster is supposed to carry the team!

I've given Coach 4 years to improve his broadcasting, because we all know it took Michael Cole that long to go from horrible to decent. He'll just continue to stink up the place unless WWE hires a new guy to balance out his suck with intelligent conversation and actual commentary.
