It's like reliving my childhood, without the parachute pants.

eStragand - October 3, 2005 07:43 PM (GMT)
DuckTales came out when I was in 8th grade...and I still thought it was cool. Alot of folks never knew that it was an adaptation of Carl Barks's long tenure on Uncle Scrooge comics from the 40's-70's. Barks is one of my idols, so I'm in line for this. My dad is still a big fan of the comics, and I think he has the original 5 episodes on tape, somewhere. When the show first premiered, he would watch it everyday at 4pm...until re-runs came along.

For one of my graduating senior thesis projects, I did an homage to Carl Barks. One of the tired and worn college art assignments is "do a project in the same manner of a famous artist". The old standbys are Lichtenstein, Warhol or an impressionist...but I did Barks. I think Barks died in 1997 at age 100.

I hope the DVD contains the first season, in order. The show ran in a linear progression, introducing the villains and other characters. I thought it "jumped the shark" when they introduced Bubba the Caveduck and Tootsie in the second season. They also shortened the shows to 10 minutes mini-cartoons, then. But the first season is probably one of the best cartoons ever produced.

Mad Dog - October 3, 2005 08:25 PM (GMT)
So it didn't jump with Gizmo Duck?

Real F'n Show - October 3, 2005 09:03 PM (GMT)
I mostly remember the theme songs, but I did watch. Zipper and Monty were fucking awesome.

Anyway, anyone else remember a cartoon from around this time where the characters flew airplanes? Used to love that show too, but the name escapes me...

Scrooge McSuck - October 3, 2005 09:10 PM (GMT)
Tailspin? Most of the show was Baloo and the little brat on the Sproose Caboose or whatever, fighting evil Pirates who also flew planes all the time.

dynamite kido - October 3, 2005 09:10 PM (GMT)
I remember there used to be a whole block of shows on everyday at 4pm when I used to get home from school.

I think it went Talespin, Chip N Dale, Ducktales, Darkwing Duck.....

Yeah, that's it. Loved that show.

Scrooge McSuck - October 3, 2005 09:12 PM (GMT)
Don't forget Goof Troop. It wasn't the best show, but it was entertaining. Pete and Goofy definitely carried it. If the show was centered around Max, I wanted to cry.

The Disney Afternoon. It was around for awhile, I think it started around 90 or so. They'd rotate the oldest show off with each season. I think the orginal lineup was Gummi Bears, Ducktales, Chip N Dale and Talespin.

Scrooge McSuck - October 3, 2005 09:23 PM (GMT)
I miss Gummi Bears. I haven't seen that since Toon Disney dropped it back in 2001. :(

Mad Dog - October 3, 2005 09:30 PM (GMT)
It was actually kicking around at like 4 am till maybe 2003. Though Toon Disney seriously sucks ass right now. Gargoyles and Chip N Dale are the only surviving shows. They dropped the late night Ducktales before the summer. All this so they can show non-Disney shows like Power Rangers, X-Men and Spider-Man.

They need Gargoyles on DVD. Disney has always been incapable of playing them in order.

Scrooge McSuck - October 3, 2005 09:35 PM (GMT)
I thank God I got rid of digital cable. No more spending $40 on WWE PPV's, Nick Games & Sports was pulled I heard, and now Toon Disney turned to shit?

RESPECT THE CLASSICS GOD DAMMIT! RESPEEEEEEEEEEEEECT!

Mad Dog - October 3, 2005 09:38 PM (GMT)
I have Dish Network:

ESPN U - 24/7 college football
NFL Network
Boomerang - Batman TAS and lots of old school cartoons
Nick Toons - Rocko's Modern Life
west coast stations

Scrooge McSuck - October 3, 2005 09:42 PM (GMT)
Don't get me started on Boomerang and Cartoon Network.

Cartoon Network circa 1995: YES! Fraggles! Smurfs! Yogi Bear!

Cartoon Network circa 2005: What the fuck is that crap?

Real F'n Show - October 3, 2005 09:50 PM (GMT)
Rocko's modern life REALLY needs a DVD set. So does Doug for that matter. Fuck, they might as well just give a set to all the good shows, Rugrats, Ah! Real Monsters, I'd buy them all...

Scrooge McSuck - October 3, 2005 09:52 PM (GMT)
Rugrats? Yuck... I used to like that show, but since around 2000-ish, I found it to be very crappy. I'm glad they finally aged them in the new series, but I wasn't into that either.

Don't know what's up with your digital cable, but I still got Nick GAS.

Scrooge McSuck - October 3, 2005 09:58 PM (GMT)
Oh, then Repo lied! He said they were yanking it off in favor for "new programming", meaninig bye bye Get The Picture, Guts, Finders Keepers, Legends of the Hidden Temple, etc. etc.

Mad Dog - October 3, 2005 10:02 PM (GMT)
I thought Rugrats was ok but inferior to Doug and Ren/Stimpy when they came out in 92 I think. It still surprises me that Rugrats outlasted both shows. Though Doug sucked the big meat missile when Disney got control of the show.

Scrooge McSuck - October 3, 2005 10:04 PM (GMT)
Disney's Doug wasn't that bad, but the Nickelodeon run was easily better. The Disney version one did produce an entertaining Gameboy Color game, though. :)

Mad Dog - October 3, 2005 10:06 PM (GMT)
I hated it. Disney completely stripped out the feel of the old show.

Scrooge McSuck - October 3, 2005 10:09 PM (GMT)
It could've been worse... uh.... I've got nothing. (watches DVD of "Wish Kid", another show Toon Disney removed in favor of crap no one ever watched)

Real F'n Show - October 3, 2005 10:12 PM (GMT)
For Rugrats, I was talking about the older stuff, up until the first movie. Ever since they added Dill the show was crap, especially the one's with Kimmy and the one's where they grew up.

I agree with Mad Dog that Disney's Doug sucked. The Nick version was clearly better.

Rocko still owns them all.

Scrooge McSuck - October 3, 2005 10:14 PM (GMT)
Heffer's Brother: Dad used to call him steak.

Sorry, that's 1 of my favorite lines from Rocko. If anyone never saw the show, Heffer was raised by wolves, and his father wears a hair piece.

Real F'n Show - October 3, 2005 10:16 PM (GMT)
Is the Ren and Stimpy DVD set being put out by Nickolodeon? If so, they should really start releasing sets of their old shows. I'd guarentee they'd be big sellers.

Rocko
Rugrats
Doug
Real Monsters

what am I forgetting?

Scrooge McSuck - October 3, 2005 10:18 PM (GMT)
I think you touched on all of the cartoons other than the Angry Beavers, but that came much later I think.

Mad Dog - October 3, 2005 10:20 PM (GMT)
Hey Arnold's not without it's charms. Invader Zim is also a brilliant show.

They have some new one where it's about a kid and his dad's like from KISS or something. Great concept but they fuck it up in every possible way.

The problem with the Doug switch is they changed everything. Roger's suddenly rich? No more Honker Burger? Even the characters didn't act like themselves. It was essentially a completely new show that just happened to have characters that looked and were named like the Doug characters.

Some of Cartoon Network's stuff is good but it's almost all the Toonami and Adult Swim stuff though. Camp Lazlo is pretty good since it's from the goods that did Rocko. Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends is also a really good show.

Yeah, but that was one of the few "newer" shows that I liked. Better than this stupid Fairly Odd Parents and As Told by Ginger shit...

Salute Your Shorts and Hey Dude were also the shit, but I think I remember them coming out on DVD already...

So it didn't jump with Gizmo Duck?

Gizmo Duck was after Bubba the CaveDuck.

Disney plunked out a new daily cartoon series, annually, for about 6 or 7 years.
Not sure of the years, but I think this is how they debutted:
1- DuckTales
2- Chip N' Dale's Rescue Rangers
3- TaleSpin
4- Darkwing Duck
5- Goof Troop
6- Bonkers
7- Alladin
8- Timon n' Pumbaa

Toon Disney isn't so bad. They picked up a buncha' stuff when they absorbed the Family Channel, formerly a FOX outlet. Toon Disney shows "The Tick" nightly...so that's good. Plus, on the weekends they have "Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends". I'll watch the mid 90's FOX "Spider-Man" when I'm bored, but the pacing and plots are pretty terrible. Same for "X-men". But they do show 'em all in order. So if I ever wanted to sit down and record the entire "Dark Phoenix" series, I could do it in about a week. Same for Spidey's "Secret Wars" series.

Cartoon Network is messed up. They have a huge hit with "Justice League", but they've consistently jerked with the show's timeslot and schedule since it debutted 4 years ago. They were promoting a "new season"... they ran two new episodes for TWO weeks, then replaced the slot with "Bobobobobo" (I'm not kidding about that name). Now, new Justice League episodes aren't slated until JANUARY!

Mad Dog - October 3, 2005 10:23 PM (GMT)
I edited in so you might have missed it.

A show on Cartoon Network called Camp Lazlo is from the guys that did Rocko and it has a lot of the same voice actors and the same feel.

Scrooge McSuck - October 3, 2005 10:23 PM (GMT)
Fairly Odd Parents rules, and you know it! NEVER INSULT THEM AGAIN!

Real F'n Show - October 3, 2005 10:24 PM (GMT)
Was Bonkers the one with the police squirrel, or am I thinking of something else?

Tailspin, Darkwing Duck, and Goof Troop better get the DVD treatment eventually.

Ah, nostalgia, how I love thee.

Mad Dog - October 3, 2005 10:25 PM (GMT)
I hate the new NickToons shows. The animation looks like a 3 year old drew it and the shows are just terribly dumbed down. I'm not surprised considering Nick's part of MTV now. I guess they just want to start rotting kids brains before they hit their preteens.

I hope you're being sarcastic, because that show is fucking terrible. Timmy has the most annoying voice ever.

The kids these days are growing up with such shitty shows...

Scrooge McSuck - October 3, 2005 10:28 PM (GMT)
I like it for Cosmo and Wanda. And Mr. Crocker. That guys the shit. Without them it probably would suck, but they carry it well. I can't stomach any other new Nick series, unless you count Spongeboob Squirepants, which came out a while ago.

Mad Dog - October 3, 2005 10:32 PM (GMT)
Fairly Odd Parents needs Coach McGuirk added to the cast.

That was the one. Probably one of their weaker efforts. Came out in Fall 1992. I thought he was a bobcat, though. I only remember it because it was heavily promoted during my freshman year at CSU. Some student radio station hosted a Bonkers giveway at a Burger King.

Mad Dog - October 3, 2005 11:09 PM (GMT)
Bonkers was definately the worst effort from the Disney Afternoon lineup.

Scrooge McSuck - October 3, 2005 11:16 PM (GMT)
I remember Burger King pimping it for a few months, but then the show seemed to disappear. It wasn't as bad as some shows these days, but it was definitely a forgetable attempt. (plays with old Burger King toys modeled after Bonkers characters)
