TheGreatWhiteChoate - October 3, 2005 05:30 AM (GMT)
I'm so friggin' psyched.

Scrooge McSuck - October 3, 2005 05:32 AM (GMT)
Wow, the Cardinals play a team that a bunch of 90 year old grandmothers in wheel chairs can beat. Lucky you!

TheGreatWhiteChoate - October 3, 2005 05:35 AM (GMT)
I worry about them a little in a short series. But hey, maybe you should move to the NL.

Scrooge McSuck - October 3, 2005 05:37 AM (GMT)
We'd have to play Atlanta then going by the 2005 records, and we've already owned their asses in 2 World Series'...

(ignores the colossal ass kickings they gave us in Games 1 & 2 of 1996 and the 6-0 deficite in Game 4)

TheGreatWhiteChoate - October 3, 2005 05:38 AM (GMT)
*ignores the Yankees

TheGreatWhiteChoate - October 3, 2005 05:40 AM (GMT)
Someone's touchy about their ancient rotation.

Scrooge McSuck - October 3, 2005 05:42 AM (GMT)
Shawn Chacon, Aaron Small, Carl Pavano, Jaret "INeed a New Arm" Wright and Chien-Ming Wang? Wow, if they are ancient, I hate to see how old Randy Johnson is.

TheGreatWhiteChoate - October 3, 2005 05:45 AM (GMT)
Let me rephrase that:

Chacon: Deal with the devil
Small: A 30 year old rookie? File that under ancient
Pavano and Wright: Old man arms
Moose: Old, old old
Wang: I'll give you that one
Johnson: Played cards with Abe Lincoln

Scrooge McSuck - October 3, 2005 05:48 AM (GMT)
Aaron Small was up in the majors multiple times since the early 90's. Hardly a rookie.

Mussina I'll give you, because he's getting up there in age. Awesome stuff on the Johnson one. He was probably the eye witness to Lincoln being shot by Wilksbooth.

TheGreatWhiteChoate - October 3, 2005 05:49 AM (GMT)
Hate to call you on that one, but he's only been up twice before: 1 game for Atlanta and 7 for Florida, and he didn't pitch nearly enough to qualify him for not being a rookie this season. He's still considered a baseball virgin.

Scrooge McSuck - October 3, 2005 05:51 AM (GMT)
Uh, hate to tell you, but he was a somewhat regular player in 1996 (or '98, I forget).

Edit: Reliever, and in 97 he played 71 games (40-ish in 1998).

TheGreatWhiteChoate - October 3, 2005 05:55 AM (GMT)
Interesting....they only have since 2000 listed at espn.com, and everyone still calls him a rookie...

Scrooge McSuck - October 3, 2005 06:01 AM (GMT)
Obviously people who don't do their homework. ESPN only goes back 4 years for Tino fucking Martinez, and he's been around since 1990. Yahoo only goes back to 2002, but they have a link to show entire career stats.

Yes, Small has had limited action in the majors since '98, but he's hardly a rookie. He's just a journeyman.

jamiegeist - October 4, 2005 03:57 AM (GMT)
Oh yes! Only 3 more months of baseball now that we're past the first 842 games.

But uhhh, go White Sox, or something.

Scrooge McSuck - October 4, 2005 04:05 AM (GMT)
If you don't like baseball, no one's putting a gun to your head and forcing you to watch or discuss it.

TheGreatWhiteChoate - October 4, 2005 06:02 AM (GMT)
Maybe he's just a White Sox fan.

Scrooge McSuck - October 4, 2005 12:44 PM (GMT)
Nah, White Sox fans are actually cool. He's probably a Royals fan. :P

eStragand - October 4, 2005 06:51 PM (GMT)
Riiiight.. only 3 more months of baseball. Sheesh, you're probably a hockey fan, where they play 865 games for the sole purpose of eliminating the Nashville Predators from contention.

Can't beat this: it's a Tuesday morning. Baseball playoff games are on.

Turns out that the Padres WILL finish under .500. By a fluke in MLB's scheduling, they were allowed 3 more games to get that 82-80 record down to a more representative 82-83.

TheGreatWhiteChoate - October 4, 2005 07:48 PM (GMT)
The Cards are taking them out behind the woodshed.

Mad Dog - October 4, 2005 07:56 PM (GMT)
They should. The Cards should be humiliated if this series goes to a 5th game.

Now we get to see the White Sox get destroyed.

TheGreatWhiteChoate - October 4, 2005 07:58 PM (GMT)
I'm not sure they will. Boston has one of the most terrible bullpens ever conceived. I think they started raiding my hometown little league team.

Mad Dog - October 4, 2005 08:12 PM (GMT)
Yeah but Chicago has been freefalling for 2 months now. They would've been fucked had they not had 75 wins by the start of August.

Scrooge McSuck - October 4, 2005 08:16 PM (GMT)
Padres almost pulled off the comeback, but Isringhausen said "Uh-Uh Bitch! This here's my game!" I was pulling for them when it was 8-3, but it wasn't meant to be. :(

Sox/Sox will be tough, so I'm going with the Sox.

TheGreatWhiteChoate - October 4, 2005 08:19 PM (GMT)
Pulling for the Padres? ....I'm not sure I can talk to you...

Scrooge McSuck - October 4, 2005 08:29 PM (GMT)
I love comebacks, and I missed most of the game, so I wanted more. Plus it was bases loaded with the go-ahead run at the plate. You've gots to cheer for that when you don't root for either team.

TheGreatWhiteChoate - October 4, 2005 08:30 PM (GMT)
I'll grant you that.

Scrooge McSuck - October 4, 2005 08:42 PM (GMT)
White Sox monkey spanking Boston 5-0 going into the top of the 2nd. Clement has turned into such a piece of shit the last 2 months.

eStragand - October 4, 2005 08:56 PM (GMT)
You're surprised about Clement? Throughout his career he's been around .500. Sort'a like the Jake Plummer of pitchers--when he's on, watch out. But he's not , watch out for flying baseballs.

Scrooge McSuck - October 4, 2005 09:02 PM (GMT)
I've never paid much attention to Clement. I just remember he was nearly unbeatable before the All-Star break, but since then, it seems like he couldn't get a win to save his life.

I'm not complaining though. ChiSox all the way! (waves a banner reading "1919")

Oops... (crosses out last "9" and writes "7")

Mad Dog - October 4, 2005 09:16 PM (GMT)
He hasn't been quite the same since he got the line drive off the dome.

eStragand - October 4, 2005 11:03 PM (GMT)
1917...when Pants Rowland was the manager.

<Jerry Lawler voice>So the White Sox haven't won the Series since they've been de-pantsed!</Jerry Lawler voice>

Scrooge McSuck - October 4, 2005 11:10 PM (GMT)
White Sox take a 1-0 series lead with a 14-2 massacre. I thought the White Sox were supposed to be a pitching and defense first team, and offensive explosion second. :)

eStragand - October 5, 2005 04:56 AM (GMT)
In the nightcap Yankees v. Angels game, Tim McCarver proved once agian why he's dumber than a bag of hammers. Both of these instances happened within five minutes of when I turned it on:

1- They were talking about Steve Finley and how he's been a decent contributor for several teams. McCarver, the "analyst" said "he played for Boston..... then Houston and Arizona..." Finley has NEVER played for Boston.

2- Shortly after, they focussed on Chone Figgins and his personal stuff. Figgins listed his favorite movie as "Rocky 5". Joe Buck poked fun at Rocky FIVE....then realized that Figgins was born in 1978, so he must have missed the real Rocky movies. Buck then said that the original Rocky came out in 1976. McCarver, the "analyst" said "...then Figgins was THREE when Rocky One came out..."

Some announcers screw up..but then come back and correct themselves. Or their partners will slyly work in the correction and the incorrect guy will laugh it off. The Brewers crew of Daron Sutton and Bill Schroeder do this alot, and it helps the broadcast the way they have fun with it. But McCarver's comments go unchecked, as if he has a "Say Stupid Stuff for Free" card.

I HATE Tim McCarver! Why this braindead douche is consistently allowed to urinate all over significant games is a mystery. He's done more to embarass the game than Marge Schott, Bud Selig or George Bush, Jr ever did. I really feel for Joe Buck...he's able to work through the shit McCarver spews out, but Holy Frickin' Christ on a Go-Cart-- McCarver's fucking stupid!

Scrooge McSuck - October 5, 2005 05:01 AM (GMT)
Rocky IV ruled and that came out in 1985, so "Shawn" should've watched that. :P Actually, the soundtrack ruled. The movie left a lot to be desired.

I agree. McCarver is bumbling drunken idiot who doesn't know what the hell he's talking about. He's a lot like John Madden when it comes to commentary. Both are so basic and dumbed down, they say some of the funniest shit ever.

TheGreatWhiteChoate - October 5, 2005 05:52 AM (GMT)
My favorite McCarverism went something like this:

I don't even think Tim Wakefield knows what Tim Wakefield is doing out there as Tim Wakefield.

And I hate Joe Buck, too.

Scrooge McSuck - October 5, 2005 06:00 AM (GMT)
Sounds like Bob Dole, because Bob Dole likes to talk about Bob Dole whenever Bob Dole can.

eStragand - October 5, 2005 08:32 PM (GMT)
Couple years ago, the Yankees were playing the A's in the playoffs. Denny Neagle was putting a headlock on a teammate in the dugout and clowning around. Buck said something like "Neagle's a big wrestling fan....probably teaching him teammates some moves". A relevant comment. McCarver immediately countered with: "and Matt Stairs...... is a hockey fan".
