In a rather surprising move, Jeff Jarrett defeated Raven to become the new NWA World Heavyweight Champion at a Border City Wrestling event on Thursday night in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Jarrett defeated Raven with the help from America's Most Wanted (Chris Harris & James Storm), turning the tag team heel.
TNAwrestling.com heavily promoted the title change along with a fancy press release and a photo from the event showing Jarrett displaying the NWA World Title high with both Chris Harris and James Storm at his side. To even futher solidify the title change, it was stated that "NWA Championship Committee member Larry Zbyszko was in contact with the promoters of the show, and Zbyszko has informed TNAwrestling.com the title change is indeed official."
The article also includes quotes from Jeff Jarrett, Chris Harris and James Storm. It notes that "Raven left the arena immediately following the bout and refused to comment on the situation." The match between Raven and Jarrett was billed as the first ever NWA World Heavyweight Championship Match in Windsor in 47 years. TNA had 5 cameras at the event to film the title change and are expected to post the footage online very soon. This event also included other TNA talent such as Bobby Roode, Abyss, Petey Williams, Jerry Lynn, Eric Young, Johnny Devine, A-1, Rhino, Chris Sabin and Christopher Daniels. This title change comes only two weeks before TNA debuts on Spike TV, which is the same move the company made before they debuted on Fox Sports Net with Jarrett as the champion in June of 2004. |

It's house show stuff so he could potentially lose the belt right back or on the first Impact. I would only find this acceptable if it's to possibly set up him jobbing to Jericho or someone new coming in that he's going to be fodder for. I don't see him getting any kind of long term reign out of this as the current booking staff knows he wasn't working as champ.
I do find the AMW heel turn to be semi-interesting but that short hands them for face tag teams.
Scrooge McSuck - September 16, 2005 05:57 AM (GMT)
They didn't have many heel teams either. They have the Canadians and... uh... are Kip James/Monty Brown still a team?
Mad Dog - September 16, 2005 06:04 AM (GMT)
There's another team in there somewhere.
I was also thinking that maybe the advertised controversy leads to Jarrett getting stripped of the title on the first Spike Tv Impact leading to a tournament.
I can kind of see why they're going with Jarrett as their Champion. I don't like it but he is a familiar face to a lot of fans and he was last seen as a major player in a major company by a lot of fans. Raven loses points because he was seen as a loser in his WWF run. I think we'll know once and for all where they're going with this reign on the first Impact.
I still have some faith in the current booking team.

I'll give it a chance, but I'm running low on "TNA excuse points." Taking the title off Daniels and putting it back on Styles instead of Joe is another current issue I can't quite grasp.

I have no idea what they are doing. I'm sure that they have something planned though.............only time will tell. This could certainly lead to a tournament though and that would be great if that's how they are going to start off their Spike run.

To give him a reason to face off with Liger next month. Liger might be getting an X Division Title run as a good faith act towards New Japan.
I think speculation where this leads is mostly pointless because the company is in limbo till 10/1. I think the company is going to show up on Spike with a new direction. But for the sake of discussion here are the potential ways I see it going.
1. Jarrett gets stripped of the title and leads to a tournament where someone like Samoa Joe wins the title.
2. We're in for another year of Jarrett as champion which immediately shoots TNA in the foot. I have a hard time buying into this one because the current booking team has really been getting that Jarrett isn't the answer.
3. Jarrett loses the title back to Raven on the big October PPV to give Raven a proper win and re-establish him as a main eventer for the new comers.
4. Jarrett jobs the title at the big October PPV to someone else. Ron Killings, Monty Brown, Abyss, Rhino or someone similar.
5. Jarrett jobs it to an incoming big name that they've kept hidden away for the first Impact. Chris Jericho possibly.
6. Jarrett loses to a returning old timer like Nash and we're stuck with crappy shows again.
7. Jarrett loses the title back to Raven before 10/1.

The Wal Mart pack is also officially available.

Isn't this what we were all afraid of? JJ taking back his belt just before the Spike debut? I smell doom.

This is what I was afraid of.
Oh, and AJ Styles winning the X belt right before the Spike debut doesn't surprise me either. And I'll put money on America's Most Wanted taking the tag titles before the debut.
Why? Because when TNA was about to debut on FSN last year, they made sure that Jarrett was World champion, Styles was X Champion, and AMW were tag champions. In their eyes, those are the most fitting title holders for each belt and will provide the best first impression for new viewers.
Personally, I think a debut with Styles as World Champion would have been a lot more effective.
eStragand - September 16, 2005 07:22 PM (GMT)
It's possible that Jarrett has the title for continuity's sake. For most of the time Impact was on FSN, Jarrett was champ. I'm not sure, but I don't remember Styles making many Impact appearances as champ, and I think Raven's reign was completely in the "dark TV" months. So maybe...(MAYBE).. they're thinking that Jarrett as champ would add familiarity to any carryover viewers from FSN. Whatever the reason, I agree that he won't have the title long.
Real F'n Show - September 16, 2005 11:27 PM (GMT)
I agree with Ernie to the fullest. It's still pretty stupid to have your WORLD TITLE change hands on a show that nobody saw, especially to new fans. Can't say I didn't see this coming, though.
prof_plague - September 17, 2005 02:30 AM (GMT)
I see this leading to a TV tournament with the finals on a new PPV of theirs.
Big F'N Swigg - September 17, 2005 07:31 PM (GMT)
THIS SUCKS FAT MONKEY BALLS.
Jarrett has now screwed Raven twice.
