Title: So I just finished rewatching Star Wars
Description: and I'm not quite sure...

You know, I can see some of the appeal of the "Holy Trinity," but I'm not as sold on them as some are. After rewatching it, I find that the films are a bit shallow. It's not that they're not good, but they're more equivalent to Summer Blockbusters in my mind. It lacks a feeling of a deep realism that I would expect out of films that are as highly regarded. To be honest, I see the same problems with Episodes 4,5, & 6 that so many people complain about in Episodes 1 & 2. It's too simplistic, etc.

Discuss.

Not to be a prick Swiggy....but the only thing around here that shall be called the "Holy Trinity" will be the George A. Romero "Dead" films.

:ph43r: <---- For the record....the ninja and I feel VERY stong about this.

Big F'N Swigg - December 22, 2004 02:15 AM (GMT)
It's not that I think they are, but so many others do.

::APOLOGIZES GREATLY TO THE NINJA. SWIGGY WOULD NEVER PURPOSEFULLY CAUSE THE NINJA TO BE ANGRY. I AM SORRY NINJA.::

Just to make myself clear.

:ph43r: <----The ninja is pleased. He now will go watch Dawn of the Dead.

Star Wars shouldn't be viewed as a deep, moving piece of art. It's sci-fi, action adventure stuff. Nothing more, nothing less. Taken in that capacity, I do think it is very good for the genre and I have thoroughly enjoyed all five episodes. It is simplistic, but moreso by design than by fault, as it never strays from its theme of good vs. evil. IF you like space/action movies, I can't imagine you liking any better than these. If you don't, it wouldn't shock me if these didn't do a lot for you.

I'm more of a Star Trek guy myself.

Star Trek?!!? STAR TREK?!

Mad Dog - December 23, 2004 01:55 AM (GMT)
The worst thing you can do with Star Wars is think about it too much. Lucas has never had the ability to add any depth to his movies what so ever. The only reason that Empire Strikes Back was the best was because someone else directed it. Just listen to some interviews and you'll realize that Harrison Ford and the director completely saved that movie from Lucas's horrible writing.

Solo's "I know" line was just meant to be "I love you too" if Lucas had been directing.

whitemilesdavis - December 23, 2004 02:20 AM (GMT)
Eh, I wouldn't go that far with it. Maybe with each individual movie, but what other series has been so strong for so many episodes? Not Star Trek. The only one I could even stomach was Wrath of Khan. The Bond series dropped off 20 years ago, and there's really nothing else even remotely like it in scope. You have to give it respect for that if for nothing else.

I just watched the documentaries on the bonus disc, and boy is it self-important. "Star Wars changed this..., Star Wars did that.... Star Wars is the greatest...."

Scrooge McSuck - December 23, 2004 08:17 PM (GMT)
Well, it IS the most famous Sci-Fi movie series other than the almost always suck-fests with the name "Star Trek" attached to them.

I wish on one Lucas would just break down and say "boy having another director on Empire Strikes Back really saved my ass".

It's funny if they have the director from Episode V on. You can tell from his tones that he doesn't think highly of Lucas' writing at all.

You were watching the Star Wars bonus disc right? What were they gonna say, we suck?

George Lucas: This piece of [bleep] was a [bleep]in' disastor since day 1. No one could work worth a [bleep] and I'd rather have that hotty blonde [bleep] my [bleep] all day long.... wait, what was the question again?

whitemilesdavis - January 8, 2005 08:44 PM (GMT)
"If you're lucky enough to be watching this documentary before the main feature, save your time, it's garbage"

Scrooge McSuck - January 8, 2005 08:48 PM (GMT)
I think that's a viewer discretion for the Phantom Menace  Seriously, I actually LIKED the Phantom Menace, except for Jar Jar Binks (Duh) and the cocksucker from Jingle All The Way making Anakin Skywalker look like a fucking pussy doucebag mongrol.

whitemilesdavis - January 9, 2005 02:51 AM (GMT)
I liked Phantom Menace a lot, and II is probably my favorite of the series. Who am I kidding though, I drank the Lucas Kool-Aid a long time ago.

Scrooge McSuck - January 9, 2005 02:55 AM (GMT)
Darth Maul will remain my favorite character, mainly because he looks so bad ass, and I love the ninja-type moves he does. Gotta love the double-bladed lightsaber too. Fucking sweet. I still get goosebumps when Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon come (lol) face to face with Maul in the... hanger bay whatever thing-a-ma-bob.
