A barbed wire cage match is apparently coming to World Wrestling Entertainment in 2005, according to promotional material released by PPV distributor In Demand for the 2/20/05 No Way Out PPV in Pittsburgh, PA.

The blurb reads as follows:

Conflict has a new battleground in the first ever barbed wire steel cage match. There's no place to run. There's no way out. SmackDown presents WWE’s No Way Out, Sunday, February 20th, live at 8pmET/5pmPT on Events iN DEMAND pay-per-view.

This would be the first time there is an advertised barbed wire match of any kind in WWE history, although Mick Foley and Terry Funk pitched doing a no ropes exploding barbed wire match at Wrestlemania 14, via satellite from Funk's Double Cross Ranch in Amarillo, Texas. The idea was later tossed out when WWF hired Mike Tyson to appear in the main event of the PPV. Foley would eventually use a barbed wire bat in several matches during feuds with Triple H and Randy Orton.

What makes this most interesting is the location of the PPV in the State of Pennsylvania as the State Athletic Commission there had banned the use of barbed wire (as well as light tubes) for professional wrestling events during the latter end of 2002 during the Philadelphia independent wars, feeling things were getting too violent and were going to become a health hazard for both the wrestlers and the fans. The decision was made following a no ropes barbed wire I Quit match promoted by Combat Zone Wrestling at the ECW Arena featuring John Zandig vs. The Wifebeater in November 2002.

It will be interesting to see if WWE is forced to adhere to the same series of rules that independent wrestling promotions are all made to work under within the confines of the State of Pennsylvania.

WOW, I'm shocked that they are even thinking of doing this. Naturally I'm interested considering that I will probably check this out since it's in my hometown.......but rather strange nonetheless.

It's going to suck. Sorry for the lame comment, but it has failure written all over it in permanent ink. Besides, if it's Big Show vs. JBL... thats just gonna make it worse.

I can't imagine either of those guys being willing to take the brutality necessary to make a barbed wire match memorable. If they just have the barbed wire there, but don't go all out with it, it will just be a distraction that will take away from the match. Add to that the fact that fans have been trained to expect big spots in cage matches and you could have a really crappy match.

It'll probably just be the rubber barbed wire that Foley used during his Cactus Jack run. Move along, nothing to see here.

I was thinking that as well. It's still hard for me to believe that they will do this especially how Mania is such a short time after this PPV. But I assumed that they would be the barbed wire of a rubber kind.

The WWF can't even do a cage match right these days. How can I possibly expect them to get barbed wire right?

Honestly though, can ANYONE get barbed wire right?

No, because it's a limited gimmick and only sick freaks seem to get a kick out of the blood you get from the match. I hate them because it's a sucky match and I don't enjoy seeing guys tear themselves apart for a couple of dollars.

Well, I wouldn't be against it if it was to blowoff a major fued. This isn't quite that fued.............

So I wonder if it will be a steel cage wrapped in barbed wire, or a cage made completely out of barbed wire. The latter sounds better. Too bad it's JBL vs. Big Show most likely...

whitemilesdavis - December 23, 2004 02:46 AM (GMT)
The problem is that this has intrigued me, but there is NO WAY these guys can pull off a good match, thus leading to disappointment. WWE just doesn't have a young Foley or Funk on the roster right now.

The best barbed wire match I've seen (as far as spots and such) has to be the Corino/Cide match from RoH. They did actual moves with it. Granted, I'm not big on Puro, so I don't know about that.

As far as this match, it's gonna be that ghey rubber barbed wire, and everyone knows it. I don't know why they'd even hype it to just cop out, but whatever.
