Title: Parenting question

No, no..don't freak..I'm not planning on popping out any little fellers anytime soon. Rather, I'm curious on your opinions regarding a questionable "parent" in my neighborhood.

On the back side of my townhome complex, a rather trashy family has lived for the past two years. I think it's a single mom, her two kids and whichever guy she's boinking that week. They have a misbehaved dog and take to warming up their cars at 1:30 am everynight. I could maybe understand "warming up" the car in January...but it hasn't been close to freezing since May and they let their car idle for 20 minutes everynight atround 1 am. I've concluded that someone in the place must work nights. Though I've noticed that the house is noisy, occupied and lit up during normal, "human" hours (9am to 11pm). Not really my business, but there's no law against being a dumbshit.

Now here's the part that bothers me. They let their kids run around and "play" in the middle of the night. About two summers ago, I got home after a night of drinking and rejections, at around 1 or 2 am. I'm walking out of my garage when two kids run in front of me with their basketball. I asked them "whoa..what're you guys doing out here?!" They simply said "We're PLAYING" and went about their business like it was no big deal. Shoot hoops. Play tag. It's 1am! I figured it was simply a middle of the summer thing...maybe the family was out late or the kids were jacked up on Dr. Pepper.

Since then that's become the norm. I'm a nightowl and usually stay up until 12 or 1 on the weekend. Yet every other night, year-round, I hear those same kids playing outside. They walk their yappy dog in the middle of the night. My dog can sense him walking by, and goes apeshit in the middle of the night. Last night I was awoken at 1:21 am by the kids and their dog. Keep in mind that since June, two shootings and three deaths have occured within maybe 100 yards of my complex (heck, during the second shooting the suspects dropped their GETAWAY CAR about 20 feet from my garage!).

The kids are enrolled in a local school and still get up to attend during the academic year. I'm not getting on a moral highhorse and saying I should call social services or anything. I could stand the crack-ho single mom and even the noisy cars.... but isn't this fucked up? C'mon... keeping your kids up until 1:30 am on a nightly basis? It'd be rotten to piss on them while they're down. However, next Thursday is my last night in the "hood" and I'm thinking of dumping all my dog's shit in their yard. At 3am or course.

No matter what the ages of the little brats is, 1:30 in the fucking MORNING? Jesus... here's my graph for age and bed times.

5-8 years old: 8:30 pm
9-11 years old: 9/9:30pm
12-14 years old: 10/10:30pm
15-16 years old: 11 pm
17+: Who gives a shit?

That's basically how I based my weekdays when I was in school. Today, I sleep as early as 9 pm or as late as 3:30 am (unemployed), depending on how much pepsi I've drank during the course of the day and what time I wake up (anytime between 4 am and 2 pm).

You should've picked up the gun (I assume you meant that instead of card) and shot their dog or something, just to give them a message that you're pissed off with them.

I'll tell you what to do eStragand. Call child welfare on their asses. No more kids for them, no more noisy neighborhood for you.

How old are these kids? I'm assuming 8-12 range.

Do you live in a bad neighborhood? I'm assuming yes due to your description.

You should absolutely report them to child services. These children run an incredible risk of being kidnapped, raped or murdered being out that late at night.

Do it! Do it! Do it! Do it! Then point and laugh while running down the street naked and eating a cookies & cream ice cream cone.

I wouldn't go that far. But it's going to be extremely annoying for him if one of those kids gets kidnapped or killed. YOU WILL be a suspect at some point in the investigation. Which will see you quickly dropped but it will be a pain in the ass as you'll have to talk to police several times.

Judging by the area he lives in, it's scumland, and the cops don't give a shit what happens.

Mad Dog - August 18, 2005 03:52 PM (GMT)
The media loves dead kids and the cops will be under a huge amount of pressure to solve such a case.

Scrooge McSuck - August 18, 2005 03:58 PM (GMT)
Tell that to Harlem and Detroit.

Coincedentally...their house was QUIET last night. If I'm a suspect, then all 73 other homes in the complex are suspects, too. I spoke to some neighbors last night and apparently the issues are known-- to the neighborhood, the HOA and to the authorities.

It's not 100% ghetto, but the area has come down significantly in the six years I've lived here. There's some police jurisdiction issues and we're located in an "island". The cops who preside over the area have to drive outside of their regular beat and through Denver and Aurora jurisdictions to get there. The abandoned murder car was left in my complex for so long because the cops were unsure over who would take the case. If you literally cross the street, you're in Aurora.

For what it's worth, I spoke to the officer on the scene that morning..and he looked like Jonesy from Reno 911. He laughed and said "man, I've NEVER seen a car with this much evidence in it!"

I'm just glad to be out of the place. In '99 and '00 there was an old freak who would walk through the complex around 11pm every so often, yodelling "Hello...hello".

But there were some cool things. There's a farm right next door and last weekend was a ghetto birthday party for some kid. The parents went out and rented an inflatable "air walk" jumping castle. I'm getting THAT for my next party.... assuming I ever have a party.
