Ace Steel Def. Delirious, Matt Stryker & Sterling James Keenan in a 4 Corner Survival by pinning Delirious with a top rope powerbomb.
Colt Cabana Def. Spanky in a fun comedy match. After the match, Punk came out and ripped into the fans, saying he carried Joe last year, and provided the best possible commentary on DVD's.
BJ Whitmer & Jimmy Jacobs Def. Chad Collyer & Nigel McGuinness to retain the ROH Tag Titles. Apparently Collyer has a mohawk now.
Generation Next (Austin Aries, Matt Sydal & Roderick Strong) Def. The Embassy (Abyss, Alex Shelley & Jimmy Rave) in a 6 Man Tag Match. By winning, Sydal becomes an official member of GeNext. Apparently an awesome match. Roderick was apparently way over, and lifted Abyss for his firemans carry/front backbreaker before it was broken up. Abyss got "Please Come Back" chants.
Jay Lethal Vs. Low Ki went to a No Contest
Matt Hardy Def. Homicide with a roll-up. Low Ki ran out to help Homicide, and was run off by Lethal. Apparently a considerable portion of the crowd booed Hardy this time out.
Samoa Joe was the first person eliminated in the World Title match. Christopher Daniels was the next eliminated. Punk Vs. Gibson for the World Title.
James Gibson Def. CM Punk for the ROH World Title Apparently the place exploded, and Spanky is in the ring celebrating. |
OK, now there is some frustration/confusion going on in my head right now. I really have no problem with Gibson winning the title......but he better be around for about the next six months or ROH has totally fucked off every single ounce of credibility that the title HAD. Having Joe get eliminated first in the four way is also mind boggling. WTF are they thinking? Why does Hardy defeat Homicide? Fuck Hardy.........they need to get him out of there immediately.
Mad Dog - August 13, 2005 01:38 PM (GMT)
WCW syndrome is in full effect with RoH now.
Gabe has completely lost his fucking mind. I give him credit though. He managed to destroy the second most credible title in the world in about a month. That takes some serious skill.
dynamite kido - August 13, 2005 01:41 PM (GMT)
The sad thing is, I don't know which is worse........they fucking up the title or screwing over Joe/Homicide multiple times. I'm glad Joe is in TNA these days as well.
Mad Dog - August 13, 2005 01:44 PM (GMT)
And the worst part is they had the perfect end to Punk with Colt Cabana taking the title off him to send him to the WWF. That would've been the blowoff to 3 years of RoH history.
Despite what people think, Cabana could hold the title. I mean they gave fucking Xavier six months with the belt. I think they could give Cabana 3 or 4 before he dropped it to Danielson or Cide.
And what's with the fucking protection of Low-Ki? It seems the bigger an ass he is the more RoH goes out of their way to accomodate him.
dynamite kido - August 13, 2005 02:21 PM (GMT)
The bad thing is, I don't think Danielson will be back at this point. I'll be surprised if he comes back to ROH unless he gets a steady TNA job in the fall. I couldn't agree more that the Cabana/Punk match would have been the perfect way to blowoff Punk as champion as well. I also have no clue as to what the hell they are doing with Low-Ki either.......every match he's in seems to be a non finish since he came back.
Mad Dog - August 13, 2005 02:29 PM (GMT)
The RoH fans are really annoying right now. They just lap up whatever shit gets thrown in front of them. They've become such a parody of the stupid ECW mutants it isn't even funny.
It's even funnier when you consider they'd savage anyone else for doing this but RoH is doing it so it's genius.
dynamite kido - August 13, 2005 02:39 PM (GMT)
One promising things about the bots though was apparently they didn't give Hardy the warmest reception.
Mad Dog - August 13, 2005 02:41 PM (GMT)
Yeah but it was that whole ECW thing. I haven't seen any of them actually jump on the decision to put him over Homicide.

Judging from everything that I've heard they apparently shat all over the ending which I believe was hardy rolling him up.
The Last Free Voice - August 14, 2005 04:40 AM (GMT)
Yea, the crowd wasn't happy with that ending. It was actually about fifty/fifty all through the match. And again, I say let's wait and see with the Gibson thing. I agree Cabana should have gotten it, but apparently he isn't going anywhere right away. Tonight he got turned on by Spanky, so who knows.

Did the finish to the Hardy/Homicide match come off as bad as it sounded LFV?

-The crowd gave a standing ovation for Delirious' antics before the match. (He went nuts and ran around in the ring before sliding outside and running laps around the ring.) The match was good, but a bit contrived, as it involved several spots in which all four guys were involved in the same move.

| Colt Cabana Def. Spanky in a fun comedy match. |
The match was fun as Spanky and Colt played it as if they were friends wrestling as practice instead of a real match. Several moments of "Oww, that hurt!" and then "Sorry about that, you ok?" The highlight of the match came as Spanky and Colt ran the ropes a la Hogan & Warrior, which led to Colt working the butt of Spanky. (I know, it sounds bad, but that's the only way I can explain it) and later Spanky calling time-out because he was winded.

Ironically, listening to this sounded a lot like a HHH promo on RAW. Except I actually cared about what he had to say. Punk was wearing slacks and a white dress shirt. My wife really liked that. So did the girls sitting next to her. I thought he looked like he joined Right To Censor. But I digress...

An entertaining match, if only for the shit Collyer got for having a mohawk. There were lots of Mr. T jokes from my section. The two teams worked really well together, as Jimmy Jacobs took a lot of shit, and then Whitmer delivered, using Jacobs as a weapon. Lots of people REALLY wanted Nigel to win. Not Nigel and Chad, just Nigel.

Apparently an awesome match. Roderick was apparently way over, and lifted Abyss for his firemans carry/front backbreaker before it was broken up. Abyss got "Please Come Back" chants. |
Nana didn't play to the crowd quite as much as he has in the past, but he didn't have to, as the match was good. I finally see the potential in Abyss. There was a great spot where Sydal (I believe) tried a sunset flip, and while Abyss was trying to remain standing, Aries (I believe) hit a cross body. Abyss caught Aries, and then gorilla pressed him onto Sydal below. IN-FUCKING-CREDIBLE.
Sydal also earned his pay. He first hit a standing moonsault on Jimmy Rave, and later did a PERFECT moonsault off the top rope onto Abyss, who was standing outside the ring. Holy Shit chants abounded. Seriously, it was an incredible spot, which looked BEAUTIFUL. I'd give Sydal's moonsaults *****. The execution, not the spots.
Also: The Please Come Back chants weren't all around, the came mostly from the section facing the entrance.

| Jay Lethal Vs. Low Ki went to a No Contest |
Not much from this one, and that was disappointing. Ki and Lethal mainly kicked and punched each other. The match went outside and got lots of "Can't See Shit" chants. They finally make it back around to the ring, and Homicide shows up. The crowd gets excited, and some people are calling for a fork, but alas, it's just Matt Hardy.

Okay, so Hardy comes out and the section opposite mine starts chanting "WE WANT EDGE" right away. Matt says "Nobody wants Edge more than me!" A little bullshit promo and "Matt Hardy will not die!" and finally the match starts. I was SEVERELY disappointed, as I've become a HUGE Homicide mark, and this was mostly a WWE style match. Blah. The crowd was split almost 50-50, with mostly girls on Matt's side. And probably LFV. The match goes back and forth, and the end gets a little exciting. Lo-Ki comes out and the crowd gets excited until Matt gets the cheap roll up for the win. My section BOOED. I can't tell about the rest of the crowd, but my section was full of fat blood-seekers, and we didn't like it one bit.

| Samoa Joe was the first person eliminated in the World Title match. Christopher Daniels was the next eliminated. Punk Vs. Gibson for the World Title. |
Okay, this makes it sound MISERABLE. Here's what happens. Punk gets CRAZY heat. I mean, he gets more heat than "That fat fucking retard ref" Todd Sinclair. Which is INCREDIBLE. "Joe is gonna kill you" chants start, aimed at Punk. The match starts, and it ends up with Daniels tagging in Joe. So Joe and Punk are set to square off, dancing around the ring, when....
Punk turns around and tags in James Gibson. Fucking Genius. So we get going, and it's going to be Joe & Punk again. Punk dances around, and turns to sneak in a tag to Gibson, but Gibson drops to the floor. They stalk around the ring again, and Punk goes for Daniels, but Daniels drops to the floor and grabs a chair. So it's Joe & Punk. They go for a bit. There's a long stretch of rest holds everyone getting a chance to be in. Then Punk, who's in the match decides to "Ole" Gibson. He gets ready to charge until Joe stands in the way. The match goes on for a bit more, and Punk decides to run away from either Joe or Daniels. He gets outside, turns the corner, and Gibson flips off the apron into him. There's some more action, and Gibson ends up doing the patented "Shoulder into the ringpost" routine. Punk takes advantage and CLOBBERS Gibson with a chair. Actually, he clobbered the ringpost. He didn't even hit Gibson. At all. But Gibson bladed and was carried to the back by a herd of Zebras. The match goes on and I believe Joe eliminates Daniels. The crowd is STOKED and there are so many near falls. Finally Punk gets Joe and the crowd immediately chants for Gibson. Punk is shaking his head no. Joe and Daniels head to the back. WE WANT GIBSON chants start, and James stumbles drunkenly to the ring. The refs are holding him back. He and Punk pull out every power move in their arsenal. The ref gives us a 2 & 9/10 count when Gibson covers Punk and the crowd is irate. Gibson and Punk go up top. It looks like Gibson's in control, then it looks like a Pepsi Plunge. BUT....
Gibson hits the top rope Double Underhook Powerbomb. He goes for the cover and the crowd ERUPTS! There are some "Match of the Year" chants, which I think were a bit much, and not as many "Please Don't Go" chants for Punk, but the locker room cleared and they all shared a Coors Light with the NEW ROH Champion. They give Punk the mic, and he says all he wants to hear is Gibson's name being chanted. Spanky grabs the mic and says he wants to be the first to say.."I want a shot at that title."
The Last Free Voice - August 14, 2005 03:46 PM (GMT)
I was NOT cheering for Hardy. I can add in that the Ki/Lethal brawl was awesome (I took a shot from the roaming Cameraman in my ROH debut) and should look good on tape (Watch for me~!).
dynamite kido - August 14, 2005 05:03 PM (GMT)
By the way was there anything at all that happened from Sterling James Keenan? He a local IWC guy where I live and he can be pretty good from time to time. I was just wondering although it sounds like he just got lost in the shuffle in that opener.
Big F'N Swigg - August 15, 2005 02:14 PM (GMT)
He did get lost in the shuffle. He got some lame heat from the guys in my section because 1) "His gimmick is a cane?" and 2) his tights were a bit saggy in the crotch.
Myself, I didn't really let it bother me. He did a pretty good job. He didn't really blow any spots, at least not like Hardy & Homicide did.
The Last Free Voice - August 15, 2005 06:29 PM (GMT)
He was kind of just there. Delirous was obviously the star of the match, just do to the insane amount of heat he got at the begining.
dynamite kido - August 15, 2005 06:31 PM (GMT)
That may have changed had they let Keenan get some mic time. He's a pretty funny ass heel.
The Last Free Voice - August 15, 2005 06:37 PM (GMT)
I enjoy his LJ, so I hope he gets another shot. He wasn't actively BAD by any means, he just got overshadowed.
dynamite kido - August 15, 2005 06:58 PM (GMT)
Classic SJK line at Super Indy IV.....
"Everyone knows that Sterling James Keenan is the best thing to happen to professional wrestling since ringrats."
