Title: NEW ROH CHAMPION
Description: JAMES GIBSON

Big F'N Swigg - August 13, 2005 03:59 AM (GMT)
That's right, James Gibson beat CM Punk. Daniels was the first eliminated, Joe second and then Gibson, who had been taken to the back after a chair shot from Punk, came back from the locker room to defeat Punk. The locker room cleared and EVERYONE celebrated.

More later, but now I sleep..

FUCK ROH......

This bullshit with WWF workers is getting fucking stupid. Does having a WWF contract the only way you can fucking hold the title now.

Notice that the two signed with TNA are eliminated first. But then again, if Gibson wins the match, it makes sense to have the last person eliminated be the defending champion.

Notice ther wasn't one ROH talent in that main event.

I couldn't help but notice that myself. And that the two last remaining people have (re)signed with the WWE.

Welcome to Ring of Honor, where our booking decisions match those of 1999 WCW.

Damn, how do I always find myself in the position to defend ROH. Actually, I'm not going to. They should have put the belt on Cabana in Chi Town. BUT. And this is a huge but, it was still an incredible moment, and being there live was UNREAL. So, bad move? Most likely. Did it tarnish the night? Hell no, it made it better, because NO ONE saw it coming.

Mad Dog - August 14, 2005 04:45 AM (GMT)
I can understand being there was cool. I'd have probably thought it was cool live too. But you're at least willing to see the aftermath might not be good.

The Last Free Voice - August 14, 2005 04:54 AM (GMT)
Yes. In my blind Markdom for Punker I still refuse to believe that him holding the belt is/was bad. But Gibson may end up being bad. Or it could end up being pretty good. Time will tell.

See that's the kind of booking though that always leaves me shaking my head. ROH is getting to the point where they are just booking what's unexpected instead of what's good for the company. I still want to see these shows, it's just I have no clue what in the hell they are setting up for here in the future. That is a bad sign.....

I have to ditto that one. On the RoH website, they ran a poll asking who you thought would be RoH champion by the end on the night on Aug. 13.

So I think I'm highly annoyed at this weekend. Why couldn't Punk keep the belt one more night and drop it to Cabana? That would've been a million times better. I like how the RoH mutants are running to Gabe's side and trying to claim that Cabana isn't a main eventer though.

Big F'N Swigg - August 14, 2005 02:27 PM (GMT)
I don't think Cabana can't be a main eventer, but everytime I've seen him, he's been the comic relief. I think to give him the belt, his character would have to be more serious, and consistent in that. I'm not huge on Gibson getting the belt, but it was nice to be there when it happened. And to be honest, I see Joe as more ROH than TNA, and I haven't seen that Gibson is ready to return to Velocity this week. I do think that if they weren't giving it to Cabana, Gibson was the better choice.

The Last Free Voice - August 14, 2005 03:51 PM (GMT)
Maybe they didn't want Punks farewell in Chicago to be overshadowed by Colt's title win? (Not defending here, because I think Cabana should have gotten it, all things considered.)

SamoaRowe - August 14, 2005 04:07 PM (GMT)
From a booking standpoint, I think handing the title to Gibson was not a smart idea. They are going to hurt the title by giving it to too many people who are leaving for a larger company in the near future.

At least they didn't give it to Matt Hardy :P

That's the only rationale I can use for Cabana not winning the title at this point. For those who say Cabana can't be a main event for an other reason, are lost. Um, let's see. He's good on the mic, again though it's mostly comic reflief, his in-ring ability is amazing - mixing European wrestling with a little bit of everything else, plus logically; Colt Cabana has always been on the title petition list.

We all know RoH goes by a point system/title petition list to get a Pure title or RoH title show based on "his record, quality of opposition, respect shown towards the Code Of Honor, and inherent skill." Cabana is always one of the wrestlers on the petition list, so when he has gotten title shots, it's not like he's a midcarder getting a shot at the title.
