NEW YORK (AP) -- Rafael Palmeiro was suspended Monday for violating Major League Baseball's steroids policy, nearly five months after telling Congress that ``I have never used steroids. Period.''

Palmeiro two weeks ago collected his 3,000th hit, joining Hank Aaron, Willie Mays and Eddie Murray as the only players with 3,000 hits and 500 homers.

Palmeiro, 40, is the seventh and highest-profile player to test positive under the major league policy adopted earlier this year.

It's more than just bad for the O's. It's bad for baseball considering the pinnicle that Palmeiro reached this year.

Sucks to be Palmeiro. That really is a big blow to him personally and to his fans, and the Orioles in general. I won't pass any real judgment yet, since maybe he was taking them to help heal an injury quickly without taking time off. I heard Jon Miller say last night Palmeiro has been in a bit of a slump for the past month, so maybe he is hurt.

Yesterday, Seattle's Ryan Franklin got busted for steroid use. Both guys claim to have "no idea" how this could have happened. With all the varying names for steroids (like "Injectozol" or "Stickaphylazine") I'm sure these guys didn't do their homework. Think of all the names for "sugar" on the back of any snack product. Nobody's really clear (players, fans and MLB) on which substances are banned and which are legal....at least by NAME.
