| Q: Also, why do you think the WWE appears to have no faith that tag wrestling can help the product? With the split of the Bashams only the latest example, there just doesn't seem to be any plans to build and keep teams together over the long haul. A: I don’t think it is having no faith, I think it is just the evolution of the sport on TV is making it near impossible to do tag team wrestling properly anymore. Wow this will take a while to explain. The RAW style TV format of all big matches on TV is at fault in my opinion. Tag Team wrestling uses up so many bodies. Back in the good old days of Tag Team Glory, WWE could have 6-10 teams and would only have one or two angles for tag teams. All the teams would be on TV winning squash matches and they would get over as a winning Combo. WWE would then send out 2 or 3 different shows on the road and they would all work matches on the road. None of them would be getting beat on TV, and usually just the title program would be explained each week on TV. Now with all big matches all the time, teams have to face other teams and the Val Venis-Lance Storm team for example gets beat a lot on TV and fans write us off as ‘jobbers’. To be on TV there has to be an angle and push now-a-days, and to push 6-10 teams and have opponents for them takes up too much time. With only one road show per brand per night (Fans want loaded shows) you can’t have more than 2 tag matches, which leaves at most 4 tag teams the title match and one more. With the singles guys having to be on TV every week in top matches those program have to incorporate tag matches as well so as to not burn out the feud too fast. Having your singles guys working tag matches Kills tag team wrestling even more so, but with Big Matches every week there is no other way to do it. For fans to get the long drawn out feuds, the everyone has established finishes, a full tag team division, the industry is going to have to get back to the Squash match style TV and not give away big matches every week on TV, and I doubt fans will accept this. It is a double-edged sword. |
