UPN executives have reportedly made it clear to WWE that they don't want the Muhammed Hassan character on their network anymore.

Hassan has been held off Smackdown the last two shows after the controversy that erupted when Hassan was involved in a segment that simulated terrorist activity. The segment aired the same night as the London Subway attacks two weeks ago, and prompted a flood of negative press.

...Excuse me. AHAHAHAHAHA! AHAHAHAHAHA! AHAHAHAHA!

...

AHAHAHAHAHA!

(continues laughing like and idiot) Way to go WWE. Try booking Hassan/Batista for Summerslam when 1 guy isn't even allowed on TV!

Gotta love UPN.........the wrestling Nazi's.

whitemilesdavis - July 21, 2005 04:06 PM (GMT)
Sorry, but that could be made into a GREAT angle.

Scrooge McSuck - July 21, 2005 04:07 PM (GMT)
I wonder if UPN would've gotten this upset if Heidenreich would've become a frozen nazi.

The Last Free Voice - July 21, 2005 04:36 PM (GMT)
That pisses me off. It's censorship. UPN has no business doing that. Particularly when Smackdown is the only show people watch on their shitty network, anyway.

It's THEIR NETWORK... the WWF has to play by their rules. They can do whatever they want. It's not censorship. That only applies to the government stepping in.

prof_plague - July 21, 2005 06:07 PM (GMT)
It was up to UPN to open that segment, but they decided not to because of run-time. Fuck UPN. SmackDown might not "represent what your network is trying to appeal to" (ie all African-American performers), but it's still their highest rated TV show. SmackDown is the only show really keeping UPN from going under. (...And even then...)

Mad Dog - July 21, 2005 06:08 PM (GMT)
I doubt it. They're still probably pulling in more ad dollars from their other horribly rated shows than they are from Smackdown.

Conbined, that is.

Mad Dog - July 21, 2005 06:12 PM (GMT)
Nope, wrestling doesn't get near the ad revenue of other shows. A show pulling a 1.5 can probably make the same amount of money as one of WWF's 3.5 shows. Just how it works.

jamiegeist - July 21, 2005 06:17 PM (GMT)
The "hassan character" is being banned. Don't think for 2 seconds Vince isn't gonna make a ton of money off of this.

Regarding the 1wrestling.com story about UPN wanting Muhammad Hassan permanently off Smackdown, we've been able to confirm that is the case. I would presume he would have to go back to Raw and complain about unfair persecution (as opposed to corporate unbelievably bad foresight/borderline outright stupidity, I guess). Who knows if Spike will or won't care. The other alternative is to do away with the character this weekend. At this point that's the smart move, because moving him to Spike would be dangerous if the New York Times and other New York media follows up, because it's just more bad pub and Spike would react the same way, and WWE would look even worse, and at this point any follow-up negative pub would cause advertiser issues which they can't afford at this time. I would presume the scheduled Batista vs. Hassan Smackdown title match plans for SummerSlam is not happening and they'll have to at least consider re-booking finishes for one, and perhaps two matches for Sunday.

IDIOTS. IDIOTS.

UPN can kiss my ass - and here's to Hassan winning on Sunday

They can't keep him off TV if he's World Champion.

Scrooge McSuck - July 21, 2005 11:22 PM (GMT)
Not so fast D.A.V.E. Here's the WWE "official statement" from WWE.com...

Due to the unfortunate terrorist attacks in London on Thursday, July 7, which coincided with our pre-produced WWE SmackDown! program, UPN has asked us to be sensitive to the usage of the Arab-American character, Muhammad Hassan. We have agreed with UPN, and have not had the character on SmackDown! since that date. It is uncertain as to whether or not the WWE will continue with this character beyond this Sunday’s Pay-Per-View, The Great American Bash.

I think I'm with Dave on this one (albeit for different reasons). This is just retarded on so many levels.
