Title: How'd you get into Puro?
dynamite kido - December 17, 2004 07:37 PM (GMT)
Well for me it was basically in 95 when I started seeing guys like Eddie, Malenko, Mysterio, etc. on ECW/WCW and made me want to find some tapes. Then I went to my first ECW event (for those of you who wouldn't know....RFVideo was always at their shows) and I was introduced to the great world of tapes. From there I got into the NJ Juniors stuff and eventually collected the J-Cup/J*Crown tourney's. After than I kinda migrated into AJPW 90's in all it's greatness. Now I really only watch NOAH, but I'm always up for AJ/NJ shows that I hear good stuff about or have an interest in. I would like to start checking out more Dragons Gate and Osaka for sure though.

It had a lot to do with the talent exchanges between WCW and NJPW. I liked guys like Chono, Tenzan and Liger from their appearances and when I found good tape dealers it was only a matter of time. The 94, 95 J Cups and the J Crown Tournament were my first buys. My second purchase was the 95 G-1 Climax due to Flair's involvement and the 94 Junior Tag League. I basically just buy New Japan shows because I know the workers but I buy the occasional All Japan or NOAH tape. The G-1 Climax shows are always my favorite.

It started when I saw ECW Heatwave 98 for the first time in early 2000. I enjoyed the guys like Hayabusa, Masato Tanaka, and Mike Awesome that were coming over from FMW, so a friend and I put some money together and ordered tapes off the internet. A few months later I got back on the internet and searched for Hayabusa, which ended up leading me to finding the Super J Cup 94. I ordered this and was immediately hooked on the Juniors. I didn't start getting into the NJPW heavies or All Japan until I became a smark in late 2000.

WARNING: Watching or owning any J-Cup or J*Crown may cause to Puroresu addiction.
I swear it's like clockwork. Everyone I know that watches Puro for the most part started because of those shows......

I'm actually in the process of getting into it now. I have a bunch of random matches on some comps, and some other stuff, like The Bulldogs In Japan and the 94 and 95 J-Cups, but what I'm really looking to check out is the early-90's AJPW. I'm starting at about 1991 or so, with some custom Lynch comps covering the entire Misawa/Jumbo feud. The tapes look good, with all the 6-mans and tags from the time, and lots and lots of Kawada. I also grabbed a comp of some 70's AJPW with Billy Robinson, Race, Jumbo, and Terry Funk, so I'm psyched for that, too.

I think the J Cups are just the easiest show for a beginner to watch. If you've watch U.S. wrestling you'll know most of the guys on the 94 J Cup show and then the 95 you'll know a lot of guys because you watched 94.

This is going to sound horrible, but I've never seen Puro until 2 years ago (ducks a thrown chair). I've seen guys now and then with WCW talent exchange, but I just thought they were random guys.
Warning: Even worse comment...
I didn't know about most Puro superstars until I downloaded Super Fire ProWrestling X Premium for SNES. After that, I tried reading about some workers that I recognized and have a few tapes, but nothing much.

I want to get into it more. I would especially love the 70's stuff, and the J Cups.

First got interested when Liger came to WCW and they showed footage from NJPW. Then I got hooked up with Mike Quackenbush around 95 or so and he had a good supplier of NJPW and AJPW TV so I was following it regularly for a couple years, almost but not quite becoming a "puro elitist".
Count me as another that got hooked on the J-Cup and Skydiving J too.

I started collecting tapes in 98/99, beginning with Flair and Michaels comps. Had read some stuff about Dynamite Kid/Tiger Mask and bloody Mutoh matches and decided to find people who knew something about them. Wasn't long after that that someone started offering 6 hrs. worth of shows for $5 each in return for reviewing what was on the tapes, and voila.

Match downloads weren't really around when I first started to get into puro.

The vast majority of my puro viewing comes from message board downloads and youtube.
