(BAY CITY, MI.) - Steve Corino scored a pinfall in just over 21-minutes of action to capture the AWA World Heavyweight Championship from Takao Omori. Both Corino and Omori were bloody from the hard fought contest. This was the second of three chances that Corino secured to wrest the title from the champion in his tour of the United States.
Omori has successfully defended the title the previous night in Waldron, Michigan over Corino and Hoss Monaham in a 3-way defense. The AWA sanctioned Michigan territory, UCW, hosted the title bouts.
Samurai TV was in attendance to film the historic U.S. tour by Omori as well as AWA President, Dale Gagne. When interviewed by Samurai TV, Gagne stated that the bout was "absolutely incredible."
Many other members of the Japanese press were in Michigan to cover the tour as well.
By winning the AWA World Heavyweight Title, Corino etched his name on one of the most elite lists of wrestling champions, becoming only the third person to ever have held both the AWA and NWA World Hwt. Championships. Pat O'Connor and Gene Kiniski are the only others to have ever accomplished this feat.

If only the title actually meant something....

Has the AWA Title meant more than shit since 1988?

Wait, the AWA is still functioning? I thought it went out of business, and Vince bought it out. Or was it just the video library?

I thought their last champion was Larry Zbyszko in 1990 and closed in 1991.

Dale Gagne bought the rights to the name AWA and has been running it in some fashion for the past few years. Just recently it started to sanction a few affiliates, including Zero1-MAX in Japan, and CWF Mid-Atlantic in North Carolina. Takao Omori won the Title in a tournament a few months back in Zero1, and Corino just won the belt from him.

Considering Corino was a big part in bringing it back it was only a matter of time until he gave it to himself.

Steve Corino is now Triple... uh... Damn, I suck at this.

Great, Corino as their champion. Omori is like 100 times better than fucking Corino..............UGH.

As big of a Corino fan as I am, I do hate guys booking themselves as champ. I would like to see the match, and if he defends against a CWF opponent, I'll definitely be there. Also interesting to note: Corino won the ECW, NWA, and AWA world titles ALL when they meant absolutley nothing.

I don't think he gave himself the title, I actually think Gagne would make the decision. If you read his livejournal, it sounds more like it was decided for him to have the title.

If you go back into the thread from when Omori won it I said that Corino would have the belt within a few months.

 I can just imagine the glory that brings... a free basket of Buffalo wings and a 2-lieter bottle of pepsi from Dominos Pizza.
