Title: Who here is into comics?
Description: ....and what do you read?

dynamite kido - June 20, 2005 09:07 PM (GMT)
Just figure I would start SOME comics discussion here......so what comics do you guys read?

Here's my current list....

The Walking Dead
100 Bullets
Invincible
Y The Last Man

Big F'N Swigg - June 20, 2005 11:02 PM (GMT)
I'll read practically anything that's a comic.

I stick mostly to the superhero stuff because it's familiar, but I am currently getting Transformers, Swamp Thing, and Wolverine from my comic guy.

I'm a huge Batman mark, and I'm planning on a subscription soon.

The Last Free Voice - June 21, 2005 02:36 AM (GMT)
I don't read any monthlies regularly (last one I did was New X-Men, and quit when Morrison left). I read a lot of TPB's and Graphic Novels though. Anything by Neil Gaiman is a must have for me. I also really like Grant Morrison. I'm also digging Geoff Johns stuff as well. I need to start buying again, though.

eStragand - June 21, 2005 06:13 AM (GMT)
The whole reason I learned to read as a wee lad, was because of comics. I got sick of having to wait for my big brother to come home so he could read his Star Wars comics to me.

I won't go into all the dumb stories I've run into because of comics, but I'm a longtime DC/Marvel superhero follower. I don't follow specific writers or artists, just certain characters.

My current list:
"New" Avengers
Superman/Batman
Batman
JLA
Black Panther
JLA Classified (just until the "Super-Buddies" story runs its course)
"New" Thunderbolts
G.I Joe
Nightwing
Green Arrow
House of M
Seven Soldiers: Manhattan Guardian

I also pick up Detective, but the current story is crap and I'll resume when it's finished. I'll pick up some random junk at the grocery store or on my weekend adventures. Stuff that I have a shitload of and used to be into, like "Amazing Spider-Man", "Uncanny X-men", "Gotham Knights" or "Firestorm".

And hey, do YOU wanna' Read More About it?! Just go here:

Big F'N Swigg - June 21, 2005 04:07 PM (GMT)
I loved JMS' work on Amazing Spider Man until he introduced Gwen Stacy's kids. That ruined it for me

Scrooge McSuck - June 21, 2005 09:10 PM (GMT)
I may have read 5 comic books with superheros and a couple of Star Wars. I do read Archie & Jughead though. :) (hides in corner with shame)

S.T. Strickler - June 22, 2005 12:39 AM (GMT)
Don't worry, Scrooge. I have a small amount of Archie comic books that I used to buy in stores. Also have some Super Mario, Legend of Zelda, Game Boy, and Captain N comics.

Mad Dog - June 22, 2005 12:56 AM (GMT)
I have around a 7,000 book collection with X-Men being my main item. Though understand saying something isn't major for me still means I probably have 50-100 issues of it though.

As for Uncanny X-Men I have every issue from about 1987 till now without a missing issue. I have every major characters first appearance except for the original team's and Magneto. Issue #6 is the earliest issue I own. Roughly I only need about 180 issues to complete my collection.

I also have the Punisher's first appearance. I have the entire run of Bone as well. I at one point was I think #3 on the list of biggest spenders at my local shop.

Bastard! I also forgot to mention I have about 250 Archie, Jughead, Betty& Veronica, and Pals N' Gals Digests rotting away in my closet... I'll open my legs for a swift kick in the balls now.

S.T. Strickler - June 22, 2005 02:24 AM (GMT)
By the way, I forgot to mention that I have the "Archie Series" of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics. Got a whole bunch.

D.A.V.E. - June 22, 2005 02:50 AM (GMT)
Here's everything I'm reading at the minute (I only buy trades, one or two a week)

-Y The Last Man
-Transmetropolitan
-JMS' run on Amazing Spiderman
-Ennis' Punisher
-Ultimate X-Men
-Ultimate Fantastic Four
-Ultimates
-Rising Stars
-Supreme Power

Other stuff I've read since I've gotten back into comics

-1602, which started it all, because I really wanted to read Gaiman doing Mrvel
-Freakshow, written by a friend of mine
-Batman (Year One, DKR, DKSB)
-Midnight Nation (I'm a JMS whore - sue me)
-Watchmen (which I, believe it or not, didnt like)
-V For Vendetta (which i did)
-The Hood (No one seems to have heard of this, it's a few years old and written by Vaughan, pre-Y The Last Man. It got bad reviews and was axed but i dug the hell out of it.
-Superman: Red Son
-Guardian Devil (and I'm probably gonna get into DD more in a while)
-Preacher
-Kevin Smith's Jersey Comics
-The entire Disassembled stuff, because I like Bendis

Next? New Avengers when it hits the trades, I'm digging the House of M, and Whedon's run on X-Men

The Last Free Voice - June 22, 2005 03:05 AM (GMT)
1602 was AWESOME. Any news on what Neil's second Marvel project is gonna be? Last time I heard anything was in his blog, where he said it was a Kirby character. (Large amount of help on that one.)

eStragand - June 22, 2005 04:56 AM (GMT)
I read all 8 issues of 1602...but I never got the explanation about all the little dinosuars that were running around. Or was it in there and I missed it?

Oh yeah...and I just picked up Avengers #18, 51 and 52. Now have the entire run..so neener neener. (with the small excpetion of Vol. 3, numbers 3-12..but who counts THOSE?) Now if I can just have sex before I die, I might feel fulfilled.

dynamite kido - June 22, 2005 12:54 PM (GMT)
DAVE a buddy of mine from work always brings in new stuff for me to check out and he's gonna hook me up with Preacher this week. I've heard good things about it...........is it as good as I've heard?

He's doing Mister Miracle. He got into a huge lawsuit with McFarlane over the rights.

And DK, Preacher is fucking awesome. Try Hellblazer if you haven't already. You'll love it

D.A.V.E. - June 22, 2005 11:30 PM (GMT)
Preacher is the book that convinced me to drop at least 20 quid a week in Sub City, no questions asked. A friend, who I gave them to, regards them as the pinnacle of comics?

Me? They're fucking awesome

D.A.V.E. - July 11, 2005 10:25 AM (GMT)
Anyone into the Big crossovers? I'd kill for a decent House Of Men discussion

Sure...I'd be happy to tell you about the good and bad stuff of Da' Hizzouse. Like the fun newspaper spread, the big "mystery return", the stupid "combat fighting ad" that suckered me in, and Spidey's new job.... but you'll have to kill someone first.

The Last Free Voice - July 13, 2005 03:45 PM (GMT)
Bendis is the most overrated writer ever. Daredevil is the only thing he's written that hasn't bored me to sleep.

D.A.V.E. - July 13, 2005 04:19 PM (GMT)
I dig him. He's good, has a good thing with dialouge.

Here's the problem with HOM. "The World Changes" "Everything is Fucked Up" "An Evil Character is in charge" "A Major character is dead/broguht back from dead"

I'm sorry, but that sounds like every other Marvel "event" ever - and I'm a Marvel whore

dynamite kido - July 13, 2005 05:00 PM (GMT)
Anyone else here ever check out Steve Niles 30 Days of Night? Fucking awesome!

eStragand - July 13, 2005 06:17 PM (GMT)
That's the bad part of House of M. You KNOW at the end that someone will wave their magic wand and things will back to normal. If one of the new concepts they introduce in the parallel universe works, they'll bring he/she/it back. If not, it's forgotten. Same way they went with "Age of Apocalypse" and "Heroes Reborn". Or jump back even further to 1991's Infinfty War. Thanos kills half of the universe..but there's no drama because you KNOW things will be fixed and all the "dead" will be brought back.

Go back to what many consider the "orginal" massive cross-over (although it wasn't techincally a "cross-over", since it was all in ONE series). The stuff that worked stayed (Spidey's costume, Titana). The stuff that didn't disappeared (Doom's new costume, Volcana). They also had a few "big" plot threads/changes that shook things up for abit-- The Thing marooned as "Rocky Grimm, Space Ranger" and She-Hulk in the Fantastic Four.

So yeah, they're proably wasting 8 issues and several spin-off House of M series just to introduce a new costume or two and bring back a second-string hero-- a hero whose costume is consistently inconsistent...but that's another thread.

D.A.V.E. - July 21, 2005 11:17 AM (GMT)
Issue Four is out. Can you say Deus Ex Machina. Two of them !!! Man if it wasn't for Daredevil and Secret War and The Pulse - I'd really hate Bendis sometimes

Big F'N Swigg - July 22, 2005 12:07 AM (GMT)
I keep thinking that it would be brilliant if they would actually kill of people, and even close out a few books. But then I realize that in a year they'd all be back

Mad Dog - July 22, 2005 01:28 AM (GMT)
Man is the DCU ever a mess these days. Retconning has become such a crutch there that they use it everytime they write themselves into a corner. Plus they're killing off Batman's A list villians at an alarming rate.

D.A.V.E. - July 22, 2005 01:10 PM (GMT)
For whatever reason - I dont read DC. Only Vertigo and Marvel

Mad Dog - July 22, 2005 02:31 PM (GMT)
I only read Teen Titans and a few of the Bat books.

Who's died? I follow "Batman" and that's it, right now. They "killed" Penguin over in Detective in a "pre-WarGames Batman tale". Penguin was IN WarGames, so that ruined any suspense of Penguin's "death". Did they off somebody in "Gotham Knights"? Please tell me, so I'm not tempted to read/buy.

New Avengers#7 was okay. But when did the Wrecker become the Juggernaut? Also, they implied that he'd been locked up forever. Well, he was just in Avengers maybe two years ago (Chuck Austen's Capt. Britain story)...which would translate into maybe 6 months of Marvel-time.

Mad Dog - July 22, 2005 07:28 PM (GMT)
They killed off Poison Ivy recently in Gotham Knights.

Big F'N Swigg - July 23, 2005 12:40 AM (GMT)
I don't mind killing off some of Batman's "classic" villains. Some of them are too dated. I would like to read that issue of Gotham Knights, though.

And I don't read much DC, mainly Bat-books and the occasional Superman or Green Lantern.

But I can't stand Marvel other than Spiderman and Wolverine anymore. Their team books are killing me

Big F'N Swigg - July 24, 2005 03:55 PM (GMT)
Hey, DK, this comic company seems to have some titles you would like:

IDW

D.A.V.E. - August 1, 2005 12:47 AM (GMT)
So, I finally sucked it up and started buying the run of Daredevil books, and I get No.3, Wake Up, which is start of Bendis' run.

It's out of continuity - it's a Ben Urich story, and it sorta plods along for four issues (Urich is drawn to a kid who's a near vegetable - Dardevil is involved), and then, right then at the end WHAM, Bendis hits you with a sucker punch that blew my mind.

Four issues and I'm already blown away. This could be the start of a beautiful relationship

Thanks for the recommendation, but I know fully of IDW. I'm currently checking out 30 days of Night by Steve Niles and most of their horror movie/comic adaptations they got going.

On my vacation, I brought along a bunch of X-Men graphic novels that I had not read yet. I went through all of it while I was there, including Essential X-Men #1 (which compiled Giant Sized X-Men #1, along with X-Men #94-124 aprox).

I also brought the entire Inferno crossover story which compiled issues of Uncanny X-Men, New Mutants, and X-Factor from 1989 (I think) and the first seven issues of the new X-Men series that started in the early 90's (helmed by Chris Claremont and Jim Lee). It was a great time as I haven't read X-Men in a long time and it enthralled me all over again.

The Last Free Voice - August 1, 2005 06:59 PM (GMT)
Just got the first Sin City TPB, cuz I loved the movie and just now found where the Media Play hides the comics. It's awesome. The whole Noir look to it is just so cool. Plus the writing is phenominal.

Big F'N Swigg - August 2, 2005 12:36 AM (GMT)
I read the "Age Of Apocalypse 10 year Anniversary Special" TPB, and it sucked all kinds of ass. It's the exact opposite of what the AOA really was.

eStragand - August 5, 2005 05:08 PM (GMT)
Holy cats... does that new Black Panther suck the sack! We're talking Spirits of Vengeance bad.

D.A.V.E. - August 5, 2005 11:01 PM (GMT)
Reggie Hudlin. What do you honestly expect.

eStragand - August 6, 2005 05:24 AM (GMT)
The Writer on Black Panther is his own biggest fan. Issue six and he's already put together a "dope" soundtrack?! I had no preconceived notions of what he'd do to the character. Another rookie Writer from the land of TV and films has done a decent job on "Young Avengers".

Any chance that the Writer from Black Panther offered the same "guarantee" that Brian M. Bendis did? Can I mail him my copies for a full refund? I've paid 18 bucks for this pile of shit/pus/cum. (2.99 per issue..I think)
