Anyone here play an instrument? Anyone in a band? TELL TELL TELL!

By the by, I am slowly learning guitar and getting my own band off the ground. Very slowly.

I play bass (majored in classical bass at Gardner Webb University, but enjoy electric bass more), guitar, drums, keys, and a few other odds and ends.

Music was my full time job for about 7 years, touring the country and recording with various musicians and even my own crappy band for a couple of years. When my daughter was born, I wanted to stay home, so I got a real job. I still take the occasional gig. Most recently, I played twice this week, and played bass on the largest scale recording project of my career which was released May 29. I play at church every week to stay sharp.

It's my passion. I've been offered a couple of more full time gigs but I don't see myself ever going that route again. As it is now, it is a great hobby and source for a little extra cash every month.

I don't play anything, but years ago I used to MC. I played a few clubs and had some gigs and stuff with other people, but people tend to be a little too aggressive at hip hop clubs for me to do it as a full time gig. It was cool and I'll do it here and there..........but I'm done with it for the most part.

Did you start every rap with "Well my name is DK and I'm here to say..."?

No. Starting like that in the clubs I used to be in surely would've gotten your ass beat.

I've sat in with some rappers who wanted to use live bands. I'd say these clubs were a little more back-packer type though. Still, noone dared say "My name is ___and I'm here to say". I always wanted to hear it though. One guy stuck a mic in front of me one time for me to freestyle during a song. I gave it a shot...but it was terrible. Lot's of laughs from the crowd so it was cool.

Usually the places I would be in are those back-packer type deals and I actually participated in plenty of "MC Battles" as well. Most of the time though, it's hard to get a laugh out of a crowd unless you were making someone look stupid. Otherwise, people trying to be funny would get their asses promptly booted off stage and the crowd would get all riled up. Funny to see though, I'm glad it was never me in that position.

Had I not had a bass in my hands, been one of about 3 white guys in the joint, and obviously put on the spot, I would have been booed off the stage. I wasn't trying to be funny, I just sucked. Instead of booing me, they just laughed. I took it well.

Better than having your ass kicked.....

True, plus I hooked up with a hot black girl after the gig.

Funny thing is, the groupie chicks that used to be at some of the clubs I did stuff at. They would see you later having drinks or something and come up and talk to you and all this stuff. Yet, they didn't realize that everyone there was basically a starving artist.........aka dead ass broke. Gots to love dumb ass groupie bitches.

Yeah, I had a little indie rock band when I started school a few years ago. We'd play these clubs down on the coast. After a while you start noticing that these same chicks hang out after closing every night, talking to you while you tear your stuff down, etc. You're thinking- Geez, it's 3am, there's noone here, don't you have somewhere to go? But that's what they did. They just tried to hang out and bang guys in bands. Some of them were fairly hot too.

Now that I am thinking back on that..............I probably should have taken advantage of that.

I tried to once. Went back to the girls place, but there were a bunch of people just sitting around smoking dope. Hung out for a few minutes then snuck out. I did make out with my drummer's sister after a frat party gig once. He was none to happy. She wasn't even that cute.

Uh... in the MC vein, I was my middle schools token white rapper for two years. Won a few rap battles. never got jumped.

It's clear to me that your school was apparently filled with pussies. Not pussy....pussies.

On the other hand, LFV is the glaring example of the white kid that would've gotten his ass kicked at the clubs I spoke of.

I do have to say...I don't believe for a second that LFV has ever rapped.

I did rap, acutally. I think there are some utterly ATROCIOUS sound bites of me (aged 13 and sounding every second of it) on my other PC. Be nice to me I may dig them out. I was actually not horrible, for a white kid. And I never pretended to be "street" or anything, so I don't think I would have gotten my ass kicked (not that I'd have been at any clubs like that. I'd have more sense than that)

I actually had sense, you don't really control what kind of clubs have shows and whatnot, so you take what you can get.

I would kill to hear that.

I did some in high school, too. We used to set up at lunchtime and battle, but we weren't very good at it.


I also play the piano, believe it or not. Got about 15 years under my belt.

I'm kind of sort of learning the piano in my free time (which isn't much). I can play "Mary had a little lamb"...

I just want to be able to play Ben Folds songs.

I can play some uber simple punk songs, like We are 138 by the Misfits and stuff like that.

Since my band is not forming at all, I'm deciding to buy a beat machine and just do it myself. Right now I have about three or four original songs all the way done, and can play a few other songs, mostly by the Misfits with a couple of early years AFI thrown in. I'm thinking of trying to record some stuff and put it up on Myspace or something...
